RONNIE DAY LEADS OCEAN SPRINTS BACK TO WATSONVILLE THIS FRIDAY
WATSONVILLE, CALIFORNIA (May 31, 2011) – After a busy May that saw the Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo compete in three straight weekends of racing, Salinas’ Ronnie Day leads the points standings as the series will get back in action this Friday night.
The May 21st event at Giant Chevrolet Kings Speedway saw Bud Kaeding become the first repeat winner in 2011 as he topped Day and fast-time qualifier Justin Sanders in the feature. Kaeding also beat out Day on May 6 at Ocean Speedway.
Fremont teen Shane Golobic, who won over Day on May 13, did not make the trek to Hanford but is expected to be in action again on Friday night at Watsonville.
Running on a string of three straight runner-up finishes, Day will look to grab victory in round six of the Ocean Sprints on Friday night. Day has been vocal about his desire for race wins this season to add to his strong Sprint Car career resume.
Day leads 2010 series champion Tommy Tarlton of Easton in the standings. Tarlton has been bit by bad luck throughout the season and needs another victory to get himself back into the title hunt.
Rookie challenger Rico Abreu of St. Helena has been one of the headline stories this year as he runs third in the points standings due to his consistent finishes thus far.
Prunedale’s Sanders is the qualifying sensation in 2011 with a pair of fast-times but like Day and Tarlton he has been unable to pick up a feature win. His highlight this season was a thrilling runner-up effort to Tim Kaeding when the Golden State King of the West visited Watsonsville in April.
San Jose’s Nick Green, son of the legendary Tim Green, rounds out the top-five in the points standings as the series nears the halfway mark. Green comes into round six after a solid seventh place effort at Hanford.
Young standout Tommy Laliberte is sixth ahead of “Cowboy” Craig Smith, Kevin Pylant, Bud Kaeding, and Kurt Nelson to round out the top-ten in the standings.
Not only will drivers chase the lucrative weekly purses posted by Ocean Speedway promoter John Prentice, the drivers will also seek the $75 Ray Scheidt’s Electric Fast Time award, the DDNi Hard Charger award worth $100, and countless product certificates that have been organized by Kaeding Performance.
The Ocean Sprints presented by Taco Bravo will race this Friday night with Wingless Sprints, Micro 600s, and American Stocks also on the card. Adult tickets are just $17 with seniors 65+ $15 and kids ages 6-12 are $12. The family pass for two adults and two children is value priced at just $50. Racing will get underway at 6 p.m. with fan gates opening at 4:30 p.m.
