Andrew Terrill Brings Family Name Back To Victory Lane at TCMS

06/10/2016 (Auburn MI) The 2016 racing season at Tri-City Motor Speedway is now headed into the dog days of summer. Hot and humid weather was the initial story of the day with nearly 90-degree temperatures and nearly 100 drivers and cars entered to compete at the 3/8’s high-banked oval in Auburn. The evening’s events were sponsored by Valley Electrical Contractors.

There were twenty one Melling Select Late Models that started the twenty-five lap feature event. With the dominant #6m Dona Marcoullier not in attendance, victory lane was primed for an opportunity to greet a new winner in 2016. Pole sitter #24 Joe Pomeroy set the pace and led the initial lap before Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame member Rick Stout, driving for HOF driver Roger Wing, would take over the lead in the famed yellow #55. Stout was able to pull away from the pack as he rode the top groove. As the race continued, Stout would not only reach the tail of the field, but also found his groove begin to lose moisture and grip. Hard charging fourth generation driver at TCMS #4t Andrew Terrill caught Stout from his tenth place starting position to take the lead away on lap thirteen. Stout would give Terrill a strong challenge trying to retain the lead. However, Stout would not recover as Terrill took the family name to victory lane for the first time in the track’s dirt history. #24 Alex Hupert and new point leader #19 Derrick Hilliker would capture podium finishes. Stout and #21a Logan Arntz would complete the top five. #21s Steven Hilliker, #6r Carl Ries, Pomeroy, #0p Kris Patterson Jr., and 2016 MMHOF inductee #21d David Hilliker completed the top ten. Terrill, Pomeroy, and #11x Ryan Lanphierd won their qualifying heats.

The Thornton Brothers Septic Service Bomber Stock Division continued its highly competitive race season. Last week’s feature winner #21 Andy Koczenasz would open up the Bomber Stock events by winning the heat race. In the early laps of the feature race, it looked like Koczenasz would be one to watch as he moved to the front of the field. He would get close to challenging #77 Stacie Staszak for the lead before mechanical issues would cause him to retire from the event early. Staszak was fighting 2015 champion #09 Jack Freese and her nephew #13 Preston DeShano. DeShano would pull alongside Staszak in the closing laps and took the lead and win away from his Aunt. Staszak would have to settle for the runner-up position. She was followed by Freese, #27 Mercedes Kosha, and #18 Nick Putman.

71 Timmy Near and #21d Darren Mularz would win their heat races in the Elgin Pro Stock division prior to their twenty lap feature. #7r Dave Newcomb led the opening lap before the outside pole sitter Near took his turn at the front of the field. Near would quickly dominate the field with none of the caution flags hurting his chances of winning. He easily cruised to his first victory of the season. Point leader #14 Nate Jones took second position. #K11 Kendall Morrison, #57 TJ Gilbert, and #M65 Rick Spencer completed the top five. The remainder of the top ten included #93 John Robbins, #27 Rob Westergard, #69 Nate Murphy, #9 Marc Super, and #01 Randy Radabaugh.

23 Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modified drivers were on hand for the prelude to next week’s $1,066 to win Greased Pig 6.0 National’s Qualifying Race. Qualifying heats were mastered by #615 Chad Wernette, defending champion #7d Myron DeYoung, and #98 Austin Wonch. Point leader #20w AJ Ward had a rear caliper stick in his heat that caused him to work through and win the B-Main. With his streak five wins in his five events entered on the line, all eyes were on Ward as he would be starting deeper in the field than what he had all year. 2011 Modified point runner-up #27 Matt Szecsodi quickly jumped to the lead before a spin in turn two would put him to the rear of the field. This gave the lead to a very fast #42 Craig Vance. Vance would take advantage on the restart and pull a large advantage on the field as they would have a long green flag run. Ward, starting sixteenth, somehow got to the Vance on lap eighteen and passed Vance for his sixth victory on the season. Vance finished in second and was followed by #68 Heath Grizzle, DeYoung, and Wonch. #187 Gavin Hunyady, #511 Chaz Pray, Wernette, #33 Todd Matheson, and #4s Toby Steele took home top ten finishes.

The largest average car counts of Suspension MAXX Street Stocks in Michigan have been on hand Friday nights at TCMS. #M57 Mike Currie, #31 Bob Robinson, and #16 Steve Doty won their early qualifiers to secure spots in the 20-lap feature. The B-main winner was #23 Austin Holbrook. Pole sitter #50 Jake Thompson would once again lead a number of opening laps. Lap seven saw a change in the leader as #34 Jacob Flickinger use the bottom groove from his 12th place starting spot to take his turn at the front of the field. Using the low line and shortest way around the oval, Flickinger looked well on his way to picking up his second feature in 2016. But #x5 Eric Lake, who also had issues with his car during his heat, overcame his 17th place starting spot to challenge Flickinger on the final lap using the high side. He would nip Flickinger at the line to grab his second street stock feature in a row. #3 Mitch Clements, #96 Shane Wright, and point leader #11 Jimmy Jaenicke held onto top five finishes. #67 Ryan Fitzgerald, #73 Don Stuck, #18d David Lester, Robinson, and Thompson held on to top ten finishes.
