Tony Bruce, Jr. charges to Hockett/McMillin Memorial prelim victory
Bryan Hulbert - WHEATLAND, Mo. (September 27, 2013) The 2013 edition of the Jesse Hockett / Daniel McMillin Memorial saw a first time winner at the Lucas Oil Speedway as Tony Bruce, Jr. got the jump from the second starting spot to lead the distance in Friday’s Protect the Harvest A-Feature for his second Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real win of 2013; his tenth overall since first winning against the National Tour in 2008.
The eighth different winner in National Tour history at the Lucas Oil Speedway, Bruce bettered his finish of 2012 by one when The Oil Medics No. 18 crossed runner up to Brady Bacon.
Asked how important it was to get the jump to the lead on the start Bruce explained, “It was real important. The track was a little narrow. Down there [One and Two] you could move around a lot, down there [Three and Four] you just had to keep it wide open.”
Out of breath, Bruce gave thanks to the fans and explained why winning was so important to him, “This is a great facility and there are awesome fans in the state of Missouri. This is dream come true to win at the Hockett/McMillin race. Those guys where really good friends and we miss them and I’ve just been wanting to win this race. Last year we ran second on the prelim night and I told myself when I came back, I had to get that victory for Hockett and Daniel.”
Crossing runner-up after starting third, Brian Brown posted his eighth podium finish of the season against the National Tour in the Hockett No. 77. “When Jack and Connie called and asked to run that number, it’s something that’s pretty humbling. Me, Jesse, and Daniel had a lot of races over the years and to run this number is an absolute honor. Hopefully we can come back tomorrow and put his thing in victory lane where it belongs.”
Posting his first podium finish against the Lucas Oil ASCS presented by MAVTV American Real, Derek Hagar was almost numb as he spoke of what it meant to finish well at the Hockett/McMillin Memorial to get locked into Saturday’s A-Feature, “After I figured out I could run the top good, I started catching the No. 82. I could see I was getting close to Brown but just ran out of laps but what a great race to have. Jesse Hockett, I mean, we all miss him. I’m honored to be standing here at his memorial race. It’s overwhelming.”
Roger Crockett debuted in the Buffalo Wild Wings No. 82 and posted a fourth place run to take the final lock-in into Saturday’s A-Feature. Jason Johnson clawed from seventeenth to complete the top five after winning the night’s first of two B-Features.
Brad Loyet marched from twelfth to sixth with Evan Martin seventh. Seth Bergman climbed from eleventh to eighth with Tim Crawley from fourteenth to ninth. Blake Hahn completed the top ten after starting nineteenth.
Drivers from 16 states checked in for the Hockett/McMillin Memorial opener with 52 drivers making up the night’s field of competitors for six Heat Races going to Roger Crockett, Jay Russell, Dustin Morgan, Cole Wood, Jeff Swindell, and Logan Forler. The night’s B-Features went to Jason Johnson and Danny Lasoski.
The night’s pairing with the Speedway Motors Warrior Region saw high points awarded to Evan Martin. A crash by points leader Jonathan Cornell in Heat Race competition ended the night for the Kiowa Line Builders No. 28, giving the Sedalia driver a total of 90 points for the night. Randy Martin and Jay Russell completed the top three point earners for the region.
