Golobic Wins Floyd Alvis Salute, Bower, Baugh, Davis Championship Night Winners At Antioch Speedway

Antioch, CA...September 23...Shane Golobic of Fremont won the 30 lap BCRA Midgets Main Event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. This was the third and final round of the Triple Crown Series and also a salute to living legend Floyd Alvis. Golobic collected $6,018 for his impressive win.

BCRA point leader Caden Sarale of Stockton had the pole and raced into the early lead ahead of Golobic and Cade Lewis of Bakersfield. USAC Midgets point leader Brody Fuson of Bakersfield raced into third on Lap 3 and slipped past Golobic a lap later. Fuson made an inside pass on the backstretch on Lap 5 to grab the lead with Lewis going low in Turn 2 to claim second on the seventh lap. Golobic kept this a three-car battle with multiple passes occurring on every lap.

A Turn 1 pass on Lap 14 gained Lewis the lead with Golobic motoring into second on Lap 16 before a yellow flag waived. The battle intensified on the restart with Golobic executing an inside move on the front stretch on Lap 22 to take over. Chase Johnson of Penngrove joined the battle and went inside Lewis on Lap 23 to claim second. Golobic drove a flawless race down the stretch and picked up the impressive win. Johnson pocketed $1,418 for second, followed by Lewis, Sarale and Fuson.

Reigning WMR Midgets champion Blake Bower of Brentwood scored the victory in the 20 lap Wingless Spec Sprint Main Event, while the absent Jarrett Soares of Gilroy clinched the championship. Bower was piloting the Ted Finkenbinder owned entry, which he drove to victory in a big Wingless Sprint race in Medford, Oregon two weeks prior. In scoring the win, Bower was also presented with the Panfili Cup in memory of the longtime Wingless Spec Sprint competitor.

Hunt Wingless Spec Sprint regular Brent Steck of Roseville had the pole and raced into the early lead ahead of Jacob Tuttle of Oakley and Dylan Newberry of Brentwood. Bower made this a four-car battle up front until he got into the back of Steck and spun in Turn 4 on Lap 2. Steck was put to the back of the pack for his part in the incident, handing the lead to Tuttle on the restart ahead of Nathan Schank of Phoenix, Arizona and James East of Oakley. They ran that way through a pair of yellow flags. By the 14th lap, Bower had worked his way back up to the front and was challenging Newberry for fourth before making the pass.

Schank made an inside move in Turn 2 on Lap 15 to take the lead from Tuttle. Bower got a big run on the outside and found his way into third by the time a final yellow flag waved on Lap 17. Schank led the restart, but Bower went high to make a move around teammate Tuttle for second. He also got around Schank on Lap 19 in Turn 2. Bower scored the hard fought victory ahead of Tuttle, Newberry, Schank and James East of Oakley, who was wrapping up his second-straight runner-up season in the standings.

Jared Baugh of Pittsburg won his third Pacific Coast General Engineering Hobby Stock Main Event. Meanwhile, Grayson Baca of Brentwood used a seventh place finish to wrap up the division championship.

Jewell Crandall of Antioch led a lap before a yellow flag waved for Maddie Motts of San Pablo in Turn 4. Baugh took the lead on the restart ahead of Ty Carlson of Stockton and Ken Johns of Antioch. They ran that way until Baca used a low pass in Turn 4 on Lap 8 to get around both Carlson and Johns. Chris Long of Antioch joined the battle for a Top 3 position, and a Colten Haney of Brentwood spin in Turn 4 forced a Lap 16 yellow flag.

Baugh continued to lead the way on the restart with Long settling into third. Long made a move around Baca on Lap 18 to claim second. Baca fell back as Baugh scored the victory ahead of Long, James Thomson of Pittsburgh, Aidan Ponciano of Oakley and Kevin Brown of Oakley.

Matt Land of Elk Grove won the 20 lap BCRA Lightning Sprint Main Event. This was his second-straight Antioch win, but he had a little bit of luck on his side on this occasion.

Cody Meyer of Placerville had the pole and bolted into the lead at the start, followed by Land and Scott Kinney of Citrus Heights. Livermore's Greg Dennett was challenging Kinney for the third position when leader Meyer suffered a mechanical failure at the start/finish line on Lap 10 and coasted into the pits.

This handed the lead to Land. A yellow flag waved when Bradley Schmidt of Placerville flipped in Turn 4 on Lap 14. Land continued to lead the way as Dennett moved into second. However, Dennett was no match for Land, who prevailed at the checkered flag. Kinney settled for third ahead a point leader Dakota Albright of Waterford and Bradley Schmidt of Placerville.

Tom Davis of Los Molinos won the 20 lap Print Club Mini Stock Main Event. This was his ninth win in the championship series and 10th at the track aboard the Delbert Rios owned entry as he clenched the track championship.

Davis started on the third row, but he bolted into the lead on the start. Teammate Tony Quinonez of Corning briefly held second before an inside move in Turn 2 of the third lap gained the position for Petaluma Speedway champion Tom Brown of Santa Rosa. The race would go nonstop with Davis being challenged constantly by the persistent Brown. However, Davis prevailed at the checkered flag. Quinonez settled for third ahead of Patrick Kelley of Clovis and Richard Mitchell of Watsonville.

Point leader DJ Keldsen of Newman won his fourth 20 lap Figure 8 Main Event. With motor issues in his own ride, DJ got behind the wheel of brother Dakota Keldsen of Watsonville's car. DJ charged into the lead at the start ahead of Dakota Keldsen and Jimmy Robbins of Concord. Dakota headed for the pits after a lap with Ken Winland of Watsonville moving into third. Robbins had a near miss In the X with Angela Brown of Antioch on Lap 9, and he would join Mike Conley Jr of Antioch in the pits on Lap 12 with rear end issues. DJ Keldsen easily grabbed the victory ahead of Winland and Brown.

Next week, the track hosts the Chet Thomson Memorial Hardtop race for the eighth time. This is a race that originated at Vallejo Speedway in the 1960s, paying tribute to the BCRA Hall of Famer. The USAC Western States Midgets will be in action along with championship night for the Delta Dwarf Cars. The Super Stocks are also in action.
