THORNTON & BACA SPLIT OPENING WEEKEND AT CSP!
Tony Steele, Peoria, Ariz. (Jan 27, 2020) – Two shows are officially in the books for the 2020 season as the annual Winter Challenge kicked off over this past weekend in Peoria, Arizona. Ricky Thornton continued right where he left off last winter at Canyon earning a win on the first day before Chaz Baca broke Thornton’s streak to pick up the victory on Sunday. Shelby Frye and Cody Thompson split Northern Sport Mod features over the weekend while Andy Altenburg and Brad King each swept their respective divisions in the Stock Cars and Hobby Stocks. Dustin Washburn once again found himself in CSP Victory Lane during the Winter Challenge in the Dwarf Cars on day one with Chris Vernon picking up the victory on Sunday.
Full fields on both days for the IMCA Modifieds kicked off the 2020 season at CSP, chasing a $1,250 to win paycheck on each day. Chaz Baca, Trevor Fitz and Ricky Thornton all earned heat race wins on the opening day of action before Thornton fired off the feature event from the front row. Thornton would beat fellow front row starter Zachary Madrid to the lead as the race started and would show off his power en route to a dominating green to checker victory. Madrid and Baca would make up the top three for day one. On day two it was Alex Stanford, defending track champion Ryan Roath, former track champion Jason Noll and Thornton all earning a heat race win. For Sunday’s edition of feature action it was John Parmeley kicking things off to lead the first two laps from the front row before Baca made his way into the front to lead lap three. Baca would begin to walk away from the field until ninth place starter Thornton worked his way into the runner up spot. Chasing Baca down through traffic, the battle was on until a late caution prompted a green-white-checker finish. Baca picked up the pace perfectly, putting just enough distance between himself and Thornton to pick up the win with Roath rounding out the podium.
Northern Sport Mods also produced full fields on both days of the Winter Challenge with Taylor Kuehl, Rex Higgins and Mike Wells all earning heat race wins on Saturday. Come feature time, Shelby Frye would beat Dom Askren in a drag race to the lead to start the race. With fourth place starter Taylor Kuehl in tow, Frye would lead from green to checker on the way to her second win of the month in Northern Sport Mod action in Arizona. Kuehl and Colorado racer Camron Spangler rounded out the top three. On Sunday, Cody Thompson, Andy Clower and Kuehl picked up heat race victories prior to feature action. Clower would get the jump in the main from the second row to lead the first lap before pole sitter Mike Wells could get back around to take the front spot. Wells would lead until lap seven before giving way to the ninth place starting Cody Thompson. Thompson held on the rest of the way to best Clower and Higgins for the second feature of the weekend.
More full fields, this time in the IMCA Stock Cars produced some of the best racing of the weekend. Minnesota racer Andy Altenburg led the way on Saturday picking up heat race victories along with defending track champion Cody Center and Iowa racer Chanse Hollatz. Hollatz fired off from the front row to lead the first six laps of the feature before giving way to eventual race winner Altenburg who would lead from lap seven until the checker. Hollatz would wind up 15 th at the end of the day with Aaron Spangler and Ty Warner rounding out the podium. On Sunday, Hollatz would pick up a heat race win alongside George Fronsman and Aaron Spangler. In feature action we would see Altenburg take off from his pole starting position to lead the first half of the race before Hollatz took over the top spot. Hollatz would maintain his lead until two laps to go where Altenburg snagged the lead back, just in time to pick up the checker ahead of Hollatz and Center.
Ten IMCA Hobby Stocks drew a pill on Saturday to kick things off for the 2020 Winter Challenge with Brad King earning the lone heat race win from the outside of the front row. Jason Crowe welcomed the new season from the pole position of the feature event but it would be Jason Duggins leading the first six circuits around the speedway. On lap seven, Brad King would pick up where he left off in heat race action, assuming the lead and running away with the win. King would cross the finish line ahead of Duggins and Lyle Askren. On day two, an extra car checked in would make for two heat races, won by Virgil Mcarthur and Duggins. The luck of the draw was on King’s side as the feature winner from Saturday would draw the pole position to fire off Sunday’s main event. Leading from green to checker, King would sweep the weekend, finishing the second feature ahead of Duggins and Steve Bitting Jr.
Dwarf Cars fired off their 2020 season at Canyon as well to round out the doubleheader card with Rusty Degroat picking up the lone heat race win on Saturday. As the feature rolled off, Degroat jumped from the second row to the lead to head up the field for the first four circuits around the speedway. Working his way through traffic, Dustin Washburn found himself challenging for the lead, eventually working his way around Degroat on lap eight. Washburn would beat Degroat and Chris Trimino to the line for the win on day one. Day two saw Chris Vernon sweeping the competition, earning the heat race win before taking the feature event ahead of Degroat and Kody Cowan.
The 2020 Winter Challenge rolls on next weekend with an Open Practice on Friday, January 31 st. Racing will take place on Saturday and Sunday, February 1 st and 2 nd. Gates open at 11am with Racing slated to begin at 1pm.
The IMCA Modifieds will once again be racing for $1,250 each day and a spot on the Fast Shafts Allstar Invitational Ballot. IMCA Northern Sport Mods and IMCA Stock Cars will race for $1,000 to win each day with IMCA Hobby Stocks going for $500. Winged Micro Sprints will join the card to round out the final weekend of the Winter Challenge.
