Inside Line Promotions – PEORIA, Ariz. (March 2, 2020) – The improvement was evident last weekend for Garet Williamson, who made his debut as a Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour Rookie of the Year contender.

The Bryant Paver Motorsports team traveled to Canyon Speedway Park, where more than 50 drivers invaded the oval for the two-day event that began on Friday. Williamson placed sixth in a heat race before he advanced from ninth to eighth in a qualifier and from eighth to fifth place in a B Main.

“We struggled early in the night and found speed late,” he said. “You have to be on your game from the first time you roll out in your heat race. There’s so many good drivers out there. You can’t afford to make mistakes because they are ready to pounce, especially with that many cars.”

Saturday showed improvement as Williamson placed third in both a heat race and qualifier before he ended fourth in a B Main, which was only one position shy of transferring into the A Main.

“It was so tricky,” he said. “You had to roll the bottom in turns one and two. If you missed it getting in you were hung out to dry. Coming out of turn two it shelves off and flattens out on top. If you wanted to run the top you had to cut down before the exit. It has an oval shaped backstretch so it was tough to run.

“As a team we learned a lot. We learned so much about our setups and me getting more laps on a track like that where you have to drive and hit your marks. I don’t have a lot of laps in a sprint car so every time we hit the track I get better.”

A trio of California ovals are up next with the ASCS National Tour visiting Merced Speedway in Merced on Friday; Placerville Speedway in Placerville on Saturday; and Petaluma Speedway in Petaluma on Sunday.

“We want to put it in the show, but we want to keep learning and applying the information we learned to the next night,” Williamson said. “The goal is to be consistent and keep learning.”
