Paul Pokorski searches for speed at Plymouth in back-up car

(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) August 18, 2020 – After nearly a month away from the driver’s seat, 28-year veteran Paul Pokorski was back behind the wheel of the Pokorski Motorsports 360 Sprint Car for a Plymouth Dirt Track Racing program at The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis. on Saturday, Aug. 15.

Pokorski, who was one of 30 PDTR 360 Sprint Car competitors to check in for the evening, spent the majority of the night fine tuning the team’s backup 2011 J&J chassis, which was pressed into action following a hard accident in A-main action at Plymouth with Alex Pokorski behind the wheel of the team’s primary 2016 Maxim on Saturday, Aug. 8.

Despite heavy contact with Tyler Davis, Alex Pokorski was uninjured in the accident. However, the car suffered significant damage, which has forced the team to switch to its backup chassis for the remainder of the 2020 season. The younger Pokorski was originally scheduled to drive the car at Plymouth on Aug. 15, but work commitments prevented him from doing so, which provided the elder Pokorski with an opportunity to return to action.

After lining up fifth in the first 10-lap PDTR 360 Sprint Car heat race, Pokorski dropped to sixth at the mid-way stage of the race when Brandon Berth slipped underneath the 2014 Midwest Sprint Car Association Masters Series champion.

Pokorski held on to place sixth in the heat race, which left him to qualify for the A-main through the B main. After starting third in the 15-lap B main, Pokorski settled into third in the running order and maintained the position throughout the race to earn the 19th starting spot in the 25-lap A main.

“We definitely had a busy few days this week trying to get a car ready to go for Saturday night,” Pokorski said. “It worked out pretty well in the end, but it wasn't without its problems. This car is a different brand and design then what we had been running, so it took some different things to make it work.

“We were too tight in the heat race and needed to work on that,” he said. “We made some improvements for the B, but it still wasn't great.”

Starting near the back of the A-main field, Pokorski ran the bottom of the dry slick track surface in the early stages of the race before moving up to his familiar high line near the middle of the race.

Sticking to the cushion, Pokorski picked up two spots in the final stages of the race to secure a 17th place finish in a caution-free event won by Travis Arenz.

“We blew a radiator hose off as we were on the scales following the B, so that didn't leave us a lot of opportunity to make changes before the A,” Pokorski said. “The car wasn't horrible, but just didn't have the speed we needed. We will continue to work on it and make some significant changes for our next outing.”

The Pokorski Motorsports team will be taking next weekend off for a family event before returning to action with a tripleheader weekend of Plymouth Dirt Track Racing-Midwest Sprint Car Association 360 Sprint Car action beginning Thursday, Aug. 27 at The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis. for the rescheduled PDTR Russ Scheffler Tribute Night program, continuing as support for the Dirt Kings Late Model Tour headliner at The Plymouth Dirt Track on Friday, Aug. 28 and closing out with an MSA headline event at Beaver Dam Raceway in Beaver Dam, Wis. on Saturday, Aug. 29.

“We are taking off next week for a family celebration of life,” Pokorski said. “The team and I are really looking forward to the upcoming three-race stretch coming up the following week with two events at Plymouth and one at Beaver Dam.”
