Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (April 27, 2015) – Sammy Swindell got upside down for the first time this season during the start of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Texas Outlaw Nationals last Saturday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
The result kept Swindell, who was driving for Donnie Cooper, from continuing the race and marked his first finish outside of the top 10 this year.
The two-day event, which lost the opening round on Friday because of weather, kicked off last Saturday with Swindell qualifying 17th quickest.
“We started out all right,” he said. “In hot laps we were like fifth quick. We had a late number (for qualifying) and the track slowed down. (Joey) Saldana was the only one who went out after me that was quicker than me.”
That lined Swindell up on the outside of the third row for a heat race.
“On the initial start I was in the right place,” he said. “I was able to get down to the bottom. Going into turn one Paul McMahan missed the corner and I was up to fourth, but someone did a 360 and decided to stop. They restarted it and the second time (Donny) Schatz tried to anticipate the start. He rolled up on the car in front of him and had to get out the gas. That checked up the outside row.”
Swindell finished seventh in his heat race to miss locking into the main event by only one position. That relegated him to the Last Chance Showdown, where his runner-up finish earned a transfer into the main event.
“It would have been nice not to run the B Main, but I think we learned from that,” he said. “We made a few changes. The car felt really good the lap or two before we started the feature. Then we took off and something happened ahead of us and there wasn’t much I could do. I was checking up and trying to dodge stuff and then I got ran over from behind.”
Swindell ended upside down near the flagstand after the opening-lap melee. It marked his first DNF since the Knoxville Nationals last August.
