Swindell Records Top Five During Winged Midget Pavement Debut

Inside Line Promotions – EPPING, N.H. (Aug. 22, 2016) – Sammy Swindell scored a top-five finish during his winged midget pavement debut last Saturday at Star Speedway.

Swindell produced an efficient night while driving for Tim Bertrand at the Northeastern Midget Association event.

“It was real good,” Swindell said. “They did two practices and your time in the practice was your qualifying time. In the first practice they had all the cars out there so it got real crowded. I was fourth quick. The second one they split the groups up so you were able to run more laps by yourself.”

Swindell qualified second quickest, which lined him up last – seventh – in a heat race. He then charged to a third-place result in a heat race. That started him on the inside of the third row for the main event.

“The car was pretty good,” he said. “We made some little changes with the car and made it better. The feature started out good, but we had a problem with the wheel bleeder. It wasn’t on and the left rear tire grew like four pounds. We lost over an inch of stagger, which is a lot when you’re running five inches. It started out a little bit free and it was going to get tighter. It kept getting tighter and tighter the whole race. We were able to run laps with those guys (in front). At the end on the last restart I started on the inside and the car was tight. There was someone on the outside so I couldn’t use up the whole track and he was able to get by.”

Swindell spent the entire feature racing in the top five before ending with a fourth-place result.

“The car is so much different than anything I’ve ever driven, but it was fun,” he said. “It does the same things like when you get on a slicker track. You want to stay straight and be smooth. It’s similar to a winged (sprint) car, but it doesn’t have all the downforce. It’s similar to driving a sprint car when it gets on a rubber down track. They don’t move around much like a sprint car does because they are pretty stiff and made to run the pavement.

“I want to thank Tim and the team for the opportunity. It was a great time and I hope we get to do it again.”

Swindell will return to dirt on Monday when he will pilot a CJB Motorsports sprint car at Lebanon Valley Speedway in West Lebanon, N.Y., with the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions before tackling the AGCO Jackson Nationals at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., with the National Sprint League on Sept. 3-4.
