Inside Line Promotions – WHEATLAND, Mo. (Sept. 26, 2016) – Sammy Swindell remains a podium machine while driving for A.G. Rains.
The team produced a podium finish during all three nights of the Hockett/McMillin Memorial last weekend at Lucas Oil Speedway during the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour tripleheader, which featured 60-plus drivers each night. Swindell and Rains have recorded a podium finish during all eight races together.
“For that many cars and all the circumstances it was pretty remarkable that I was the only one on the podium all three nights,” Swindell said. “Our worst finish since I’ve been in this car was a third and we were only a lap away from passing for second.”
The event began last Thursday with Swindell maneuvering from fifth to second place in both a heat race and a qualifier. That lined him up on the pole of the 25-lap main event.
“The car has been great,” he said. “We went through our heat and passed a bunch of cars and through the qualifier and passed a few. We were high points. We got the lead (in the main event) and had a bunch of yellows. On some of the restarts the track changed. The bottom came in and then the bottom wore out so I had to go back to the top. I felt like we had a great chance of winning that, but we had a brake problem and the last half we had a shock problem. That took the edge off the car a little bit, but were still able to hang on to second.”
Swindell lost his brakes early in the race, but he managed to lead the first 21 laps before being passed for the top spot. Swindell salvaged a runner-up result.
He returned to the track on Friday for Round 2, which opened with Swindell charging from seventh to third place in a heat race and from sixth to fourth place in a qualifier. That lined him up on the inside of the fourth row for the main event.
“It took a bit to get by a couple of guys,” he said. “We spent a lot of laps racing with a couple of guys. We were the fastest car at the end. We ended up passing for second right after the checkered and first place was right there. A couple more laps and I probably would have had that won. I was able to run almost anywhere on the track.”
Swindell capped the night with a third-place finish, which ranked him second in overall points following the two preliminary nights. That started Swindell on the outside of the front row for Saturday’s $10,000-to-win finale.
“We fixed the brake issue from Thursday to Friday,” he said. “There was a little bit we were trying to sort out on the car on the setup. We finally found a good solution to that for Saturday and it was good in the race. I had a good run and led most of that. We had a restart late and about the second lap after it bounced a little bit wrong. The right front got just above the edge and it held me over there for a little bit and it let Wayne Johnson past. I was able to slide him, but he was able to slide back. I felt like I gave that one up. It just bounced the wrong way.”
Swindell, who finished second, led laps five through 26 before the miscue. He reclaimed the lead on Lap 28 before Johnson returned the favor with two laps remaining.
Swindell is scheduled to return to action Oct. 8 at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio, when he will make his debut with Blazin’ Racin’ at the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions event.
