Swindell Rallies for Runner-Up Result During Hooker Hood Classic

Inside Line Promotions – WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (May 21, 2018) – Sammy Swindell earned his fifth runner-up result of the season last Saturday during the Hooker Hood Classic at Riverside International Speedway.

“I’d like to have those seconds be wins,” he said. “We’ve been starting on the fourth, fifth, sixth rows all year and still having good finishes. At least we’re contesting for wins starting from the middle or the back.”

Saturday’s show was no different as a sixth-place result in a heat race started Swindell and the A.G. Rains owned sprint car on the outside of the sixth row for the 40-lap A Main.

“We had to start near the back of our heat and you couldn’t really pass,” he said. “We got held up by a car and that let a couple of cars pass us. That draw mixes the cars up. Sometimes you get a break and sometimes you don’t. This weekend we didn’t really get a break.”

Swindell was strong from the initial start of the main event. He quickly advanced into the top 10 and maneuvered into second place near the midpoint of the race.

“In traffic I got a run to the outside, but I got squeezed up into the fence and had to let him go,” Swindell said of his best chance at taking the lead. “Then he moved up to where I was running. When you get on these little tracks it’s narrow enough. If the leader is running on the best spot you have to move around.

“I was running the top in traffic where there wasn’t anybody, but my tires got pretty warm. When they cooled down the pressure was way down. We kept having yellows and weren’t able to recover.”

Swindell’s charge to a second-place finish also netted him the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars.
