Inside Line Promotions – SALINA, Kan. (June 18, 2018) – Sammy Swindell put together a dominating performance throughout the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com Speedweek, winning three of the six races en route to claiming the championship by an astounding 107 points.
In addition to his three wins, Swindell also placed second twice and third once to give him 11 consecutive podium finishes. He has produced 15 podiums in 18 races in the 360ci winged sprint car division this season with sixth place being his lowest finish.
“It all went really smooth,” he said. “We didn’t have any issues with the car and we got through it pretty simple I guess. The other three races (I didn’t win) we were there for an opportunity to win. When you get to the front the cars leading are usually good cars. It gets a whole lot harder to pass as you move forward. I felt like at all six races we had the best car.”
After charging from 11th to third and then garnering a feature win during the opening weekend of Speedweek, Swindell and the A.G. Rains owned team kicked off last week’s action on Tuesday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas. Swindell maneuvered from eighth to fourth place in a heat race before advancing from third to second place in the A Main.
“We were running wide open around there,” he said. “It was almost on the bottom except in turn one there was a slick spot you had to go around. I had one opportunity to get under the leader going down the frontstretch, but he closed the door going into turn one. I tried a lane up in turns three and four, but it was too fast on the bottom.”
Swindell won a heat race and maneuvered from fourth to second place in the main event the following night at Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla.
“Wayne Johnson didn’t make enough mistakes for us to go by and we only lapped one car,” he said. “That was the best we could do with the circumstances.”
Swindell wrapped up Speedweek with back-to-back victories on Thursday at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla., and Saturday at Salina Speedway.
“Creek County was probably one of the smallest tracks I’ve run a winged sprint car on,” he said. “It was a tight track. You have to be careful and you have to be aggressive. I was able to get to second right away. We had a restart and Scott (Bogucki) decided to go to the bottom. Turns three and four was better on the top. I had to time it right so I didn’t have to lift behind him when he turned down. We drove right around him. We got into some traffic and we had another yellow with Sam Hafertepe Jr. behind me. He was able to get a run and slide me. I passed him back. The next end he was able to slide across in front of me again, but I was able to pass him again. The top in turns one and two got cleaned off and a curb built up. I knew it was time to go. Instead of being cautious, just go run the car. We were able to pull a gap and get through traffic.”
Saturday’s finale was a great opportunity for the team to learn.
“All we had to do was start the main to win that Speedweek,” Swindell said. “We’d been pretty good with the setup. We had some things we wanted to try. We put that on the car to start. In warm-ups we were about a half a second faster than anyone in the last group. We stuck with it and it was good. I was able to drive a lot of places that other people couldn’t. We found something we can work with at certain places.”
It was Swindell’s first Speedweek championship and his three Speedweek wins give him four trips to Victory Lane in his last nine races.
Swindell will take this weekend off before competing on June 27 at Seekonk Speedway in Seekonk, Ma., for the Boston Louie Memorial with the NorthEastern Midget Association and June 29-30 at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, Iowa, with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.
