Sammy Swindell Excited for Opportunity at World of Outlaws Can-Am World Finals
Inside Line Promotions – FORT WORTH, Texas (Nov. 4, 2019) – Sammy Swindell is making his debut behind the wheel of the Trey Hoddick owned No. 1 sprint car this Thursday through Saturday during the Can-Am World Finals.
Swindell recently flew to New York to help prepare the car prior to the marquee World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series event, which is held at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Concord, N.C.
“We fired the car and only have a couple of things to finish and it’s pretty much done,” he said. “I’ve been through every bit of it. They’ve done a real good job. I think we’re as good as we can be on most everything. Obviously I haven’t run this motor. Sometimes it takes a few races to really hit the sweet spot with the motor, the car, the whole deal. We have a pretty good shot.”
Swindell captured the inaugural World of Outlaws race at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in May 2000 and he also visited Victory Lane there in 2012.
Swindell is fresh off making his debut for Jared Sewell during the Tony Stewart presents the VANKOR Texas Sprint Car Nationals, which was hosted by Texas Motor Speedway Dirt Track last week.
“It went pretty smooth,” Swindell said. “There were some things that I do that’s a little different. It’s a standard deal for going to a new car and making all the little, tiny adjustments for me.
“We definitely got better the second night, but we had time to go over more things. The first night was putting the seat in, getting the pedals and steering wheel where I wanted it to be. The second night we were able to go through the rest of the car.”
Swindell won a heat race, placed eighth in a qualifier and claimed a B Main before he pulled off the track early during the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour main event last Thursday.
“The track got to where they ran right around the bottom,” he said. “There wasn’t any passing going on and we had an issue with the power steering pump so I thought it was best to pull in and save it for the next night.”
Friday was a more efficient night for Swindell, who advanced from fifth to third place in a heat race and from third to second in a qualifier to rank fourth in points. That lined him up on the outside of the second row for the main event.
“The track was steadily changing and we were trying to figure out a way to go with that,” he said. “I feel like we missed the first part of the race, but the last part we were really quick. In the meantime on some of the restarts it got a bit crazy running the top and guys would slide you. A couple of times I got caught out with other people going different directions and getting crammed up and someone from behind would get by. The last eight or 10 laps I thought we were one of the better cars, but I had to come from around eighth by then. I think if they didn’t have the yellow at the end we would have got two more spots to finish fourth. Guys started running everywhere and there was some blocking going on during that last restart.”
Swindell’s sixth-place finish marked his fourth top 10 in six career 360ci winged sprint car starts at the track.
