Inside Line Promotions – JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (April 29, 2019) – Kerry Madsen recorded his first top 10 of the season with the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series last Friday at Lake Ozark Speedway.
It marked the second start of the season with ‘The Greatest Show on Dirt’ for the KI Crossbows sponsored Big Game Motorsports team.
“We were really, really strong all night,” he said.
Madsen qualified fifth quickest to open the action before he won a heat race to lock himself into the dash. He gained a position in the dash to finish fifth, which is where he started the A Main.
“It’s a big part of it,” he said. “The reality is if you run the numbers not many winners come from outside the dash anymore. If you are going to win or get a podium you need to be in the dash.”
Madsen started the main event by battling for a top-three position early before he faded to a 10th-place result.
“At the start of the A Main we were really good,” he said. “The last 10 laps we lost our speed and were hanging on. As the fuel load burns off the car changes a lot and we didn’t quite have the setup we needed at the end of the run. That was disappointing because we were strong all night, but that’s part of the process. We didn’t have the speed we needed at the end, but that’s just our third race (of the season) so there were encouraging signs.”
That was supposed to be the first night of a tripleheader with the World of Outlaws. However, weather ruined the remainder of the weekend. It washed out Saturday’s show at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Mo., before cancelling the A Main on Sunday at Jacksonville Speedway, where Madsen had overcome a 15th-place qualifying run in his group by maneuvering from eighth to fifth place in a heat race to lock into the main event.
“We drew late,” he said. “The track slowed down in hot laps and we were still third so we had the car speed. There were a couple of wrecks in qualifying before we went out and it messed up the cushion. Then I messed up the exit on my first lap, which killed the second lap. It was tricky.
“We had the car reasonably good in the heat. At that point we were using it to experiment a little bit. It was disappointing to not get the A Main in because we were confident we could go forward.”
Big Game Motorsports is planning on joining the World of Outlaws this Friday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., and Saturday at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.
