14-year-old Mitch Thomas heads to Springfield, IL for 2019 DIRTcar Racing Awards Banquet
Mitch Thomas, an 8th grader at Southern Middle School and resident of Oakland, MD, recently traveled with his parents to Springfield, IL on January 5, 2020 for the 2019 DIRTcar Racing awards banquet to collect his trophy.
Thomas, who has been racing for 6 years, recently placed 7th out of 251 drivers in the DIRTcar UMP Modified East Region division and nationally Thomas finished in 102 place out of 1737 drivers- all while being just 13 yrs. old.
In 2019 Thomas has competed in 34+ races, traveling all around WV, MD, NC, TN, KY, VA and Ohio. Along with the UMP Modified placement, Thomas had 3 Feature wins and many top 10 placements at other tracks.
Just recently Thomas turned 14 yrs. old and when asked what his plans were for the 2020 racing season Thomas stated, “I would like to continue to improve on my driving and continue to travel to bigger races in other states.”
In order to race bigger UMP sanctioned races, Thomas had to submit for his official “Dirtcar licenses”. This required Thomas to write a small essay on why he felt he should be allowed to race and his race history.
The paperwork was then presented to a panel at DIRTcar Racing and was reviewed. Thomas has recently been given the news that he was approved for the 2020 race season.
