Brady Bacon – Seventh Place run at Lawrenceburg Follows March Copper Win!
(Bill W) April 7, 2015 – Brady Bacon was back in USAC National Sprint Car action with the Hoffman Racing #69 team Saturday at Lawrenceburg Speedway in Indiana. A seventh place finish was the result, and the team will return to the high banks for local action this weekend. In March, the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma native drive Josh Ford’s #73 to victory in the Copper on Dirt preliminary in Tucson. He would follow that up with a run from 20th to second in the finale.
Last Saturday, time trials at Lawrenceburg were uncharacteristically rough for Brady. “We were fastest in hot laps, but we went early before the track started to chunk up a little bit,” he says. “It was rougher than we thought in qualifying, and we were way too tight.”
After finishing third in the heat race, he was scheduled to line up 12th in the feature grid. “Someone’s car didn’t start, so they crisscrossed the start and we ended up starting on the bottom,” says Brady. “That wasn’t the place to be. Some guys got bottled up down there and we ended up getting shuffled back even further than that at the start. We were able to get back up to the lead pack eventually.”
There was good racing within the top ten. “At the end of the race third through ninth were pretty close together,” says Brady. “Anything could happen. We were able to pass a few cars and the yellow would come out…it was just one of those nights. We wound up seventh. It wasn’t too bad after falling back that far, but I think we would have had a shot at it if we would have qualified where we needed to. We just had to take a different approach with the car starting back that far.”
Back on March 20 and 21 things were clicking for Brady at USA Raceway in Tucson and the Copper on Dirt. “It had been a few years since I’ve gotten to race at Tucson, so I was looking forward to going back there,” he says. “We were able to drive for Josh Ford, which was great. On Friday night, we opened up with quick time. We ran well in the heat race too (2nd).”
Starting sixth in the feature, he made his way forward to second. “We were probably going to run second to be honest,” says Brady. “(Richard) Vander Weerd was leading and we were going to have a hard time catching him. He was running really hard I could tell. He got over the cushion and crashed in three and four. The cushion was getting big and hard to run. On the restart, I went to the bottom, and Josh Hodges got beside me on the outside for several laps. On the white flag lap, he kind of bogged out on the top and I was able to slide by him for the win.”
Brady would have to work for his second place finish in the finale the following night. “We had some problems in qualifying on Saturday,” he says. “We started 20th in the feature. The car was working really well and we were able to get through the pack and actually got by Damion (Gardner) for the lead. He was able to change his line, and the groove on the bottom that I was running kind of went away the last five laps. It was fun coming up through the field. It would have been nice to get the win on Saturday too…it just didn’t work out that way. The car was really good.”
Brady is putting together his schedule for this weekend. “We’re going to race the local show at Lawrenceburg with the Hoffman’s,” he says. “They have a car they want to try out there. Friday, we may go to Jacksonville, Illinois and race with the MOWA.”
