Inside Line Promotions – WHEATLAND, Mo. (June 20, 2017) – Seth Bergman has a lofty goal heading into the 46th annual Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup this weekend at Skagit Speedway.
“We’re going there to win,” he said. “We’ve won at Skagit in the past and we’ve done well during Dirt Cup, but I’ve yet to produce a Dirt Cup title. Growing up in Washington it would be a huge accomplishment to win Dirt Cup. That’s what we’re aiming for.”
The Washington native will return to his home state for the marquee event at the high-banked oval in Alger, Wash., this Thursday through Saturday when the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour makes its only visit this season.
Bergman enters the weekend ranked sixth in the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour championship standings. However, he is less than 100 points out of second place.
Bergman is coming off his second straight sixth-place finish in the Sizzlin’ Summer Speedweek standings after competing in seven races in nine nights throughout Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri.
After placing 12th and sixth, respectively, during the first two rounds, Bergman kicked off last week’s action on Tuesday by finishing second in a heat race at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas. That locked him into the 10th starting position for the main event and he rallied to record a fifth-place result, which marked his ninth top five of the season.
Lawton Speedway in Lawton, Okla., hosted the midpoint of the Speedweek on Wednesday, when Bergman placed fourth in a heat race and ninth in a qualifier. That relegated him to a B Main, in which Bergman advanced from fifth to second place to transfer into the main event. He then rallied from 19th to 12th in the main event.
Bergman’s best outing of Speedweek came on Thursday evening at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla., where he won a heat race to earn a spot in the feature redraw. He then pulled the No. 2 to start the main event on the outside of the front row.
“We did well for the most part of moving forward in main events throughout the week,” he said. “Thursday’s feature at Creek County was the one time we had a decent starting position and I was able to contend for the win. We didn’t accomplish our goal of reaching Victory Lane, but a podium was a good result during a challenging week.”
Bergman ventured to Randolph County Raceway in Moberly, Mo., on Friday. He ended third in a heat race, which lined him up on the inside of the eighth row for the main event. Bergman powered to an eighth-place result, which was his 15th top 10 this year.
Speedweek wrapped up on Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway, where Bergman advanced from fifth to third place in a heat race. That garnered enough points to lock into the feature redraw, in which he pulled the second-highest number – seven – to start the main event on the inside of the fourth row.
“We didn’t have the car good enough to move forward,” he said. “I was able to battle just inside the top 10 for most of the race before fading to 11th. It was a frustrating finish to Speedweek, but we’re excited to put that behind us and head to Washington.”
