Tanner Mullens triumphs at Granite City Motor Park

On Sunday, Tanner Mullens concluded four consecutive days of racing in Minnesota with his 15th feature victory of the year.

During the evening, Mullens was among 21 Summit USMTS Modified competitors at Granite City Motor Park in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, for the final stop of the fifth annual Mod Wars program. Mullens qualified his No. 02 Modified with the fifth-quickest time on the 3/8-mile oval and finished second in his heat race. However, he received significant damage after being caught up in an accident coming to the checkered flag.

Despite the setback, Mullens’ crew got him back on track for the $5,000-to-win feature. He started on the pole of the 40-lapper and led every circuit, crossing the stripe 0.935 seconds ahead of Joe Chisholm. Joseph Thomas, Zach Benson and Rodney Sanders completed the top five.

The win concluded a strong slate of racing for Mullens, which began with the 11th annual Summer Spectacular at Fairmont (Minnesota) Raceway on Thursday.

Mullens, who was part of a 21-car USMTS field at Fairmont, qualified with the second-quickest time around the half-mile track. He drove from sixth to third in his heat and rolled off fifth to begin the 25-lap, $3,000-to-win A-Main. He raced forward two spots and finished third behind Joe Chisholm and Gary Christian. Terry Phillips took fourth and Sanders claimed the fifth spot.

The next night, the fifth annual Mod Wars program kicked off at the quarter-mile Princeton (Minnesota) Speedway with 29 USMTS racers chasing the $5,000 winner’s share. Mullens qualified fourth, won his heat, and started eighth in the 40-lap main event. He finished in the seventh position.

On Saturday, the Land of 10,000 Lakes tour continued with a Mod Wars stop at Ogilvie (Minnesota) Raceway, drawing 36 USMTS Modifieds. After qualifying ninth in his group, Mullens finished second in his heat at the 3/8-mile speedway. He began the 40-lap, $5,000-to-win main event from 11th and charged to a third-place result, rounding out the podium after Joe Chisholm and Sanders. Jody Bellefeuille and Landon Atkinson finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Mullens then wrapped up his weekend and the Mod Wards events with his Granite City Motor Park victory.

He sits third in the USMTS National Championship points chase.
