Scotty Thiel - Slump of a September
Just as Scotty Thiel and the Scott Thiel Motorsports #64 team was on a hot streak, the bad luck struck and ended many high hopes throughout the month of September. The bad luck struck the first event of September at 141 Speedway where Thiel entered the night only 71 points out of the championship. The late season charge ended quickly when Thiel expired an engine in hot laps and would borrow a car but back luck still continued as he shredded two tires over the course of the night. A small streak of better luck was presented to the team the following weekend when they went 360 racing and ended up with two top five finishes. However, the engine department was empty for the third weekend of September which forced the team to take a weekend off. This past weekend more bad luck struck as the regrouped team came it Luxemburg Speedway and Dodge County Speedway with the IRA Series.
After a 21st place finish at 141 Speedway occurred and no 410 engines left in the stable, the STM team decided to get their hands on an ASCS 360 engine and chase the money which just so happened to be over two nights in northern Wisconsin. The first night was on September 11th and held at St. Croix Valley Raceway in St. Croix, WI with the UMSS for the Kouba Memorial $5500 to win event. Scotty had very good success at that track where he won a $5,000 to win event in 2013 and was back to back Open Wheel Nationals champion as well. Thiel started out the night well with a heat race win and would start 4th it the 55 lap A-main event. Scotty jumped into the third position and would maintain that spot for all 55 laps. He gave a charge at second several times but was unable to capture the spot. It was a respectable finish for the team but the top spot would have been much sweeter. The following night was at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI for the annual Richert Memorial. Thiel struggled all night long with brake issues but managed to hold another top five performance in the main event. After starting out the night in the ninth position, Scotty charged his way up to the fourth position and did so without any brakes. He somehow held on for 22 laps without any brakes and moved up five position. Considering the circumstances, the team was pleased with the outcome.
Heading into September 19th where the IRA series would go to Beaver Dam Raceway, the STM team was unable to get one of their engines back and would be forced to take the weekend off.
The next events were held this past weekend which started at Luxemburg Speedway in Luxemburg, WI for the 2nd Annual Battle by the Bay event which was promoted by the teams own, Scotty Thiel and SixFour Promotions. 27 IRA Sprints were on hand and Scotty would set the 10th quickest time of the night. That placed him to start the heat race out in the third position. After the drop of the green flag, Scotty battled with a very tight race car and struggled to get through the corners. He fell back to the sixth position but would still capture the final transfer spot into the nights 30 lap main event. After starting out in the 19th position, Thiel worked his way up close to the top ten before making contact with a competitor’s right rear tire which launched him off the track. He somehow managed to not make contact with the outside walls and would restart the race at the tail end of the field. Scotty charged his way back and would end up in the 11th position. “Tonight was a struggle for us. We were decent in qualifying but made a bad call in the heat race and that is was ultimately cost us the night. Not making the redraw for the main hurt as we would have been fine with our qualifying time. The late charge was respectable but we had a way better car than 11th.” Stated a disappointed Thiel. Saturday evening brought the team to the “Horsepower Halfmile” at the Dodge County Fairgrounds. The last event held here, Scotty would lead 20 laps and ran out of fuel. With some unfinished business, Thiel was ready to go and reclaim the top spot. After being the 19th car out for qualifying, Thiel laid down the 4th quickest time of the night and would place him to start 5th in the heat race event. The field took the green and charged into turn one. Scotty worked the low line but would make contact with the infield barrier coming out of turn two and broke the front axle out of the car. That ended his heat race event and would have to come through the B-main. He would start on the pole since his qualifying time was the best out of the cars in the B-main and after the green flag dropped, he never looked back. In a short 10 laps, Scotty pulled away by over a half a track and would capture the win and the 11th place starting spot for the nights 25 lap main event. The field took the green and Scotty worked the low line on the first lap and would charge ahead a few positions while making his way to the top side of the track and began to build his momentum. The field took the half way signal and Scotty found himself in the 7th position, just a few car lengths from being in the top five. He had so much more corner entry speed than the next few cars so he decided to charge the bottom side of the track and he closed up the gap between himself and sixth place. With only seven laps to go, Scotty charged the bottom in turn one but would slide up a little too far and spun the car out. He would be forced to join the tail end of the field after being in a solid top ten position. The green flag flew again but Scotty was unable to make the charge back forward. He did pass a few cars in the back markers of the field but would end up crossing the finish line in the 16th position. “September has been a month not to remember for myself and this team. We have struggled about every way possible and it really hurts as we entered into the month being in contention for a point’s championship. I feel so bad for my guys and our marketing partners as we all know we are a much more solid team than our results have shown. When bad luck strikes, it strikes us hard. I thought we were over that stage in August when we had a few really good weeks but it happened again. We have one more event left this season and I hope we can make it count!” stated Thiel after the weekend.
Just one more IRA event is left on the teams’ schedule and that event will take place Saturday, October 3rd at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, WI. Scotty gave up a heartbreaking battle the last time the team came to this track. He led until two laps to go and settled for a unpleasant second place finish.

Torsion Bar Rate:
Torsion bar testing has been around as long as the bar has. There are many different ways to test bars, but they all have the same goal.... to compare one bar to another and give the results in a numerical value (PSI, FORCE POUNDS, RATE). This is good, but can be hard to understand. We simplify this process. The numbering system we use is standard to the torsion bar industries. During our test sessions, data is collected and stored in our software, which then calculates it to a torsion bar size that everyone can understand. We have found 1025 bars that test between a 1012 and a 1036 bar. Our test services take away the guesswork. We provide you with a TORSION BAR RATE. Check out www.torsionbarrate.com for more info!
