Inside Line Promotions – LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Nov. 11, 2014) – Josh Baughman capped last weekend by scoring his best career Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour finish.
Baughman won his sixth heat race of the season on Saturday to kick off the event at Southern New Mexico Speedway. That locked him into the feature redraw, where he pulled the No. 5 to start the main event on the inside of the third row.
“We got a good pill draw for the heat race and took advantage of it,” he said. “In the feature the track was narrow and there was no passing. It was about 30 laps of hot laps. I went into turn one on the start and biked it. Johnny (Herrera) and Jeff (Swindell) got around us and there was no more passing after that.”
Baughman maintained a top 10 throughout the race, which he finished a career-best seventh with the premier 360ci sprint car series.
That wasn’t the only good performance he had last weekend. Baughman overcame an early mechanical issue to rally from the back of the B Main to a 13th-place result in the main event on Friday at El Paso Speedway Park in El Paso, Texas.
“We fell behind the eight ball on Friday night,” he said. “The mag box quit on us in the heat race.”
Baughman was racing for third place a couple of laps into the heat race when he was forced to the pits early because of the issue. That relegated him to the back of the B Main.
“We pushed Jason (Johnson) across the flag stand for the last transfer spot,” he said. “We were loading up and they came to us and gave us a provisional. I want to thank the track and ASCS for that opportunity.”
Baughman, who had rallied from 16th to seventh in the consolation race to miss a transfer by only one spot, was given a provisional to tag the back of the field for the main event.
“They gave us the promoter’s provisional in the A Main and we made the best of it,” he said. “We passed a lot of cars. We went forward after having all that adversity. I just tried to pass as many cars as we could.”
Baughman maneuvered from 24th to a 13th-place result.
“It gives us a lot of momentum,” he said. “It’s going to be a tough weekend at Cocopah Speedway this weekend, but if we can put together two solid nights I think we’ll be good heading into the offseason.”
Baughman will wrap up his season this Friday and Saturday at Cocopah Speedway in Somerton, Ariz., for the Cocopah Cup Challenge with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
