Bryant Sees Big Improvement in SawBlade.com Backed Team at Devil’s Bowl
Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (March 21, 2017) – Tommy Bryant felt his SawBlade.com sponsored Cooper Motorsports team made big strides last weekend at the 44th annual Spring Nationals at Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
Bryant said he is encouraged with the handling and speed the car showed all weekend during the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader, which featured nearly 50 competitors.
“We drew a 63 pill Friday and a 64 pill Saturday which put us in the back of the heats,” he said. “In the five races we’ve run this year I haven’t drawn a pill lower than a 60. But if you look at our lap times in every race we were among the top five fastest cars on the track. We just need a little luck. And starting that far back in the heat … there were some guys playing games on the start. For one heat I had to ride the brakes so hard on the start they were glowing before we took the green. Starting that far back also means you are in dirty air and it’s hard to make up ground.”
The event began last Friday when Bryant charged from seventh to a fourth-place showing in his heat race, garnering a lot of passing points to put him in a qualifier race. A seventh-place result relegated Bryant to a B Main, where a runner-up finish earned a transfer into the back of the main event.
“We missed the setup for the qualifier and that put us in the B Main and we raced into the show,” he said. “We were way too loose in the feature and a bolt fell out of the wing so I just pulled in.”
Bryant was credited with a 20th-place result.
A bad pill draw once again put Bryant at the tail of his heat race on Saturday. He was able to gain a position and make a qualifier, in which he advanced two positions. A fifth-place finish in a B Main ended his night.
“The car was super fast and we were on pace with the fastest cars all weekend,” he said. “The shock changes we made from Florida really helped get us that forward bite we were missing.”
The SawBlade.com sponsored team will return to action this Saturday at Battleground Speedway in Highlands, Texas, with the ASCS Gulf South Region. In his last race at Battleground Speedway last September, Bryant battled for the win. However, during a red flag a broken bleeder took the tire pressure too low and made the car tight. Bryant ended with a fourth-place showing.
“We have some really good notes from Devil’s Bowl that will help us at Battleground,” he said.
