Inside Line Promotions – HIGHLANDS, Texas (June 20, 2017) – Tommy Bryant and the SawBlade.com backed Cooper Motorsports team thought their racing opportunities were done for a while because the team was out of engines.

However, a surprise gift late last week put the team back on the track for the weekend.

“We had been down on power and when we got to taking things apart we found out why,” Bryant said. “We had blown a head gasket and it was simply too much to risk to simply put on another gasket and go racing. We had leased out our spare and the other engine had some shavings in the oil the last time we ran it and needs to be gone through. I thought we were done for a while.

“James (Cooper) called me Thursday night and said Scotty McDonald was letting us borrow a motor. To be honest the car wasn’t ready to go and I have started a new job and didn’t have time to get it ready. James and his dad put the car back together so we could go racing.”

Cooper drove the car on Friday at Bronco Motor Speedway in Cleveland, Texas, with the ASCS Gulf South Region.

“It had been probably a year and half since James drove and he’s probably only driven one or two times in the last four years,” Bryant said. “He looked pretty good, but the motor was a Ford and he was having issues with the throttle linkage hanging up on the dash.”

After running mid-pack Cooper tangled with another car and cut a tire. He ended up finishing 17th.

Bryant was back behind the wheel of the No. 28 on Saturday at Battleground Speedway with the ASCS Gulf South Region. He powered from fifth to third place in a heat race to kick off the night.

“The throttle kept hanging up,” he said. “I could see the dash was pushing in when I was on the throttle and in every corner I had to push the dash out. We got it figured out for the feature.”

Bryant charged from 10th to a third-place finish, which marked his third top five this season.

“We had a restart with about five laps to go and I hung with Ray Allen (Kulhanek) and John (Carney II), but I just couldn’t get the car to come off turn two,” he said. “There was one tire knocked out about six feet and it was super slick getting off that corner and I just couldn’t get it to work.”

Bryant is tentatively scheduled to return to competition July 14 at Bronco Motor Speedway and July 15 at Battleground Speedway the ASCS Gulf South Region.
