Wilson Produces Sixth-Place Finish During Opening Night of Short Track Nationals

Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Oct. 8, 2019) – Greg Wilson highlighted the 32nd annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires by recording a sixth-place result last Friday.

Wilson and his Hercules Tires, DNC Hydraulics, Ohio Logistics and Gear Off Road sponsored team kicked off the ASCS Mid-South Region doubleheader at I-30 Speedway by winning a heat race from second before advancing from fifth to third place during a qualifier. That ranked Wilson seventh in overall points out of nearly 70 competitors, lining him up on the inside of the fourth row for the A Main.

“That event requires you to be good, but also have a lot of luck,” he said. “We had a decent pill draw, a good heat race, a good qualifier and a good feature. Unfortunately, the track got one lane with rubber for the feature so there wasn’t much passing. We gained a position to finish sixth. We felt like we were pretty good all night long.”

Wilson’s sixth-place run was his 26th top 10 of the season and it proved critical for Saturday.

The event finale began with Wilson maneuvering from fourth to second place in a heat race, but fifth-place results in both a qualifier and the B Main missed locking into the main event. However, Wilson had accumulated the most event points out of all the drivers unable to lock into the feature and therefore it earned him a provisional to start near the rear of the field.

“We had a good heat race, but we got a bad start and backed up a spot when we needed to gain a spot in the qualifier,” he said. “We didn’t make it out of the B Main, but we had enough cumulative points to get into the A Main. A few laps in a couple of cars were flipping and instead of running into them I drove it off the end of the track, got into the air and backed into the tire barriers. I made a business decision to call it a night at that point.”

Wilson will look to rebound this Saturday at Waynesfield Raceway Park in Waynesfield, Ohio, during the 2nd annual Bob Hampshire Classic with the FAST Series.

“I missed it last year because we were gone and it bothered me,” he said. “To run a race that is for a guy who has helped me become the person I am on and off the track is a huge honor. It’s hard to put it into words what he means to me. From the time I was a little kid all I wanted to do was drive for my Uncle Bob and I was fortunate to get that opportunity.”
