Inside Line Promotions – CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (Aug. 23, 2017) – Ray Allen Kulhanek experienced both ends of racing’s emotional spectrum last weekend as he rebounded from a devastating result on Friday to record a feature win on Saturday during an ASCS Gulf South Region doubleheader.

Kulhanek’s weekend began on a solid note Friday at Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, where he garnered a second-place finish in his heat race. That locked him into the feature redraw, in which he pulled the No. 2 to start on the outside of the front row for the A Main.

“I knew it was important to take the lead right away and control the race since the track was going to take rubber, and that’s what I was able to do,” he said. “I was running an easy pace to take care of my tires when I came up to lap a guy for the fourth time around Lap 15. He was running up high, but came from the top to the bottom when I tried to lap him. I turned toward the infield, but couldn’t avoid him. It was almost like as soon as he saw me beside him, it was like he turned his head left and the steering wheel went with it.

“He collected me and busted my right rear tire and some other stuff, ending our night. We definitely should have had that race won. It was really disappointing.”

Kulhanek was unable to finish the race and he was credited with a 17th-place result.

The following evening at South Texas Speedway also began well for Kulhanek with a heat race win after he started third.

“We checked out in the heat race,” he said. “We had a really good car again. In all honesty, the car has really been on ‘kill’ since the end of May.”

The feature redraw placed him fourth on the starting grid for the main event.

“I got to second on the first lap,” he said. “After that, I kind of moved around and felt the track out so that when we got to lapped cars I’d know where I could or couldn’t go. I was eventually able to get by the leader on Lap 5.

“I took it pretty easy late in the race. I didn’t want to take a chance of a lapped car taking us out again. Tommy Bryant got close to me and then we had a caution with three laps to go. They told me to pick up the pace on the restart and I was able to do that since I had more car left. It’s always good to have a little in reserve.”

It was Kulhanek’s sixth win of the season and added to his ASCS Gulf South Region championship lead.

He will be off this weekend before competing on Sept. 2-3 at Battleground Speedway in Highlands, Texas, for the 3rd annual Jim Brown Memorial with the ASCS Gulf South Region.
