Wood Eyes 360 Knoxville Nationals After Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour Northwest Swing

Inside Line Promotions – LEBANON, Ore. (July 29, 2013) – After his team recently built a new car, Cole Wood completed some valuable laps last weekend at Willamette Speedway.

Wood recorded a pair of top 15s during the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader at the 3/10-mile oval, which was the final stop along the Northwest swing before the annual trip to Knoxville, Iowa, for the 23rd annual Arnold Motor Supply 360 Knoxville Nationals this weekend.

“Overall we had a pretty decent weekend,” he said. “I wish we had a better weekend before we take off for Knoxville, but it is what it is.”

On Friday night, Wood and defending Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour champion Jason Johnson battled side by side for the lead during a heat race.

“Friday night we were pretty good in our heat,” Wood said. “I started first and was sliding with Jason for a while. I don’t know what happened, but we kind of got together going down the backstretch. He kept going and I got a little sideways. (Jeff) Swindell got me at the line and we ended up third.”

Wood started the 25-lap feature on the inside of the sixth row and he battled for a top-10 position for most of the race before a miscue relegated him to the back of the field.

“I spun out by myself and went to the back and I was only able to pass a couple of cars,” Wood said after finishing 15th. “The car was pretty good. I just made a mistake and slid through the center.”

With a heavy track during heat races on Saturday, Wood finished sixth to put him 16th in points heading into the 30-lap main event.

“For the first 15 or 20 laps until that red flag we were really good,” he said. “After that red flag I got uncomfortable. I wasn’t feeling good at the top at all. It felt like it was falling on the right front.”

Wood held on to a 13th-place finish, which was his 25th top 15 of the season. His focus now shifts to the 360 Knoxville Nationals, which begins on Thursday.

“It is the biggest event of the season,” he said. “We struggled there last year and I’m really looking to try to improve on what we did last year. I’m a lot more comfortable in the car. I’m excited to see what we can do there.”

In four 360ci races this season at Knoxville Raceway, Wood has a pair of top 10s, including a career-best third-place finish.
