MURPHY MADE MOST OF SHORT TRACK NATIONALS

Coming off of a rough weekend at the Dells Raceway Park, the season finale for the American Ethanol Super Trucks was going to be just as exciting with Murphy trailing 16 points behind the points leader.

It was a cold, cloudy, and misty morning in Loves Park, IL at Rockford Speedway this past Sunday, October 4th. With only one practice session the CMR team knew they had to make the most of it and that is exactly what they did. With the truck fighting a tight condition, the team made adjustments accordingly. Leading into qualifying, Murphy decided to go out on brand new tires without a scuff on them as that is what he did for the season opener at Rockford in April. Murphy came over the radio right after he took the checkered and said, “Well that isn’t a pole run, the tires were still not broken in yet”. Even with the tires not broken in, Murphy still topped the charts in qualifying with a 13.5 second lap. That is four tenths of a second faster than 2nd place. Usually the gap is within a half a tenth. The only truck he needed to worry about had qualified in the 2nd to last position which is extremely uncommon as he usually qualifies in the top 3 spots with Murphy.

When it was time for the 10 lap heat race, the invert ended up being a complete invert. With only 10 laps Murphy decided to play it safe and save everything for the feature and was able to bring it home in the 7th position. When it was time for the 35 lap feature, Murphy had closed the points lead from 16 to now only 3 points. With the points leader catching the invert and starting outside front row (2nd), Murphy had to charge his way to the front at the extremely hard to pass Rockford Speedway. With Murphy starting 2nd to last, he knew that the only way for him to grab the Championship is to finish in front of the leader. At the drop of the green for the 35 lap feature, Murphy was on the hunt. He quickly made his way into the 4th position. He hung behind the 3rd place truck waiting for the right time. Shortly after, the pass was made for 3rd. In the meantime, the championship points leader had a commanding lead and 2nd place had a half a straightaway on Camden. With the laps winding down, Murphy was able to catch 2nd place and make the pass. With only 5 laps to go, Murphy was reeling in the leader but ran out of time to catch him. After the race Murphy said, “It is unfortunate that the championship points leader started in the front row. Most of the year, whoever started on the front row usually won that race. Most races I started towards the rear since I qualified in the top 3 most of the year. It is what it is and everyone worked really hard to get us to where we are. I drove as hard as I could after having to start 2nd to last but just ran out of laps. Thank you to our partners that have helped us this year. We wouldn’t have gotten to where we are if it wasn’t for them”.

It is unfortunate how the lineup came about for the 35 lap feature but there is no doubt that Camden put it all on the line and gave it all he had at the tight Rockford Speedway. Stay tuned for a 2015 season recap.

All of this wouldn't be possible if we didn't have our great partners like The Ronald McDonald House of Chicagoland and Northwestern Indiana, True Power Racing Oil, Car Doctor Jr., O’Hare Auto Body, Mark Signs, and 83 & Devon CITGO.
