The gloves were off this past Monday night at the Can Am Speedway in Lafargeville New York for the first ever appearance for the Short Track Super Series North Region for the Modified and Sportsman divisions. A great crowd and a solid field in both classes were on hand for the debut event, plus an $800 to win show for the Sundance Leisure Thundercars. The Watertown Boxing Club was on hand with a mobile ring before the start of the “Gloves Are Off 51”.

The first two tries at a start resulted in minor incidents but the third time was the charm when the green flew for the 51 lap event as Zach Payne led the way over Jack Lehner and Zach Payne. The top three had a great battle going on but Lehner was not content to run 2nd, as he took the lead on lap 6 and began to pull away, but behind him, other top runners were on the charge. Mat Williamson came from 8th to challenge Payne for the runner up spot and was able to get it on lap 15, but still had a long way to go to catch Lehner as 4 time track champion Tim Fuller made his way to the 4th spot. On lap 22 Williamson had caught Lehner and was making a move for the lead, but the yellow flew for Cedric Gauvreau, who slowed on the front stretch. On the restart Williamson was able to get by for the lead and would turn in one of the most dominant performances in recent memory, pulling away from the field. Behind him Tim Fuller was passing cars quickly as he got by Lehner for 2nd and Chris Raabe climbing to third, but time was running out. Even in lapped traffic Mat Williamson was on rails and would not be denied as he would take a 6 second lead all the way to the checkered flag for his 2nd series win of the season and 2nd ever win at Can Am. Tim Fuller was the top local across the line in 2nd ahead of Chris Raabe, Zach Payne and Matt Sheppard, who came from the back after a pit stop to finish 5th.

The gloves were off for round 2 of the night, which featured the Short Track Super Series North Regional event for the Sportsman and Donovan Lussier was looking to keep his dominant run across the northeast going, as he led early over Cedric Gauvreau, Jeremy Slosek, veteran Dale Welty and track regular Gavin Eisele. Both Lussier and Gauvreau were the class of the field in the early going but lapped traffic came into play, which tightened up the top three in a hurry. With 10 laps remaining the top three had a fierce battle going on as Lussier continued to show the way while Gauvreau and Slosek gave him all he could handle. On lap 19 Taylor Doxtator slowed with a fuel pump issue and was done for the night. When the green flew with 6 to go Donovan Lussier hit it perfectly and despite the challenges from Gauvreau and Slosek, it was Donovan Lussier’s night as he scored his first STSS North Regional Series win, to go along with a South Regional win at Bridgeport earlier this year. Cedric Gauvreau crossed in second with Tyler Peet making a big move at the end of the race to grab third with Gavin Eisele, the top local across the line in 4th and Blaine Klinger 5th.

The third and final round of the Gloves Are Off night, would feature the Sundance Leisure Thundercars, with a 15 lap $800 to win race and it was an exciting one as Corey Valade, Tony Frezzo, Francis White and Jared Gilson were in a tight four car battle in the early laps. Valade had the lead but Frezzo was right there with him for the opening 10 laps as Francis White and Jared Gilson staged their own side by side battle for third just behind them. On lap 11 Colby Hibbard slowed with a problem setting up a restart. When the green flew Valade continued to show the way over Frezzo with Gilson grabbing third from White. On the final lap Corey Valade appeared to be on his way to another win, but the yellow flew setting up one last shot for Tony Frezzo and the rest of the field. When the green and white flew together, Corey Valade would pull away and record his 5th win of the season. Tony Frezzo claimed another runner up finish ahead of Francis White, Jared Gilson and David Rasmussen.
