Henry’s Rumble Series Thwarted By Poor Luck

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – After a two-race stint in Australia at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway, Bellevue, Ohio native Cap Henry returned to the United States in time for the holidays, as well as the Rumble in Fort Wayne on December 27 and 28. However, the Rumble Series race would be in a polar opposite animal: his Henry Motorsports 600cc winged micro sprint on the tight one-tenth mile flat pavement track set up inside Fort Wayne’s Allen County War Memorial Coliseum.
Getting up to speed was no issue for Henry, timing in sixth fastest of 15 entries in the #17 car, numbered in honor of his grandfather Chuck. However, he did suggest that the car’s handling was a bit off. Crew chief Guy Myers went to work tuning in the chassis (which he built) for Henry’s heat race. After the inversion on qualifying times, the Myers/FTZ Yamaha would be placed outside front row for the second heat race. Myers’ setup changes were spot on, as Henry quickly jumped to the lead and waved goodbye to the field, putting a straightaway between himself and the runner-up before the checkered waved.
When feature time rolled around, Henry’s combined qualifying and heat race effort put him on the outside of the second row on the grid. On the start, he’d quickly make his way up to second. Unfortunately, disaster struck when the chain came off Henry’s machine, forcing him to take his car back to the pit area and retire from the event, being scored in the 14th spot on the official results.
Ready to redeem himself on the final night of the Rumble, Henry qualified third, just seven one-hundredths of a second off the quick time. He’d start inside second row in heat race action, again showcasing his speed, winning the ten-lap heat by a car length over the previous night’s nonwing 600cc winner, Erick Rudolph.
The heat win would again place him outside row two for the feature race, and it looked like Henry was primed to pick up at least a podium finish, if not a win. The cards held other plans, however, as an opening lap pile-up took out several cars starting near the front of the field, collecting Henry, the damage to the front axle being enough to again end his night. He later acknowledged that “the new car had plenty of speed, just wasn’t our weekend,” after the Saturday night chain issues and Sunday night crash resulted in 14th and 13th place scorings, respectively.
Henry would like to thank Simpson Race Products, FK Rod Ends, Wings Unlimited, Level Performance, K&N Filters, and Keizer Wheels, as well as his family for their continued support, as well as a special thanks to Guy Myers, Sonny Conger, Andy Atkinson, Scott and John Ivy, and Mike Bricht for their efforts on getting the car prepared for the Rumble Series event.
