Chad Humston – Back on the Track at Last…Busy Weekend Planned!

(Bill W) May 24, 2011 – It had been almost two weeks, but the Mark Burch Motorsports #1m and driver, Chad Humston, finally got some racing action in last Saturday night at the 81 Speedway in Wichita, Kansas. A fourth place run proved to be a good preparation for this weekend. Five events are planned on the Memorial Day weekend schedule starting with I-80 Speedway on Thursday, and continuing at the Junction Motor Speedway Friday, Jetmore, Kansas on Saturday and Sunday, and finishing back at 81 Speedway on Monday.
In Saturday’s heat, Chad may have been having flashbacks to his last feature event at Knoxville when all heck broke loose in front of him on a start. He would start outside of row four. “We had a bunched-up first start at it,” he explains. “A couple guys in front of me got sideways and hit the brakes. When I hit mine, the guy behind me jumped my right rear tire and bent the right side panel of the top wing. Everyone was just going for the win.”
The next try at green resulted in perhaps too good a start for the Giltner, Nebraska driver. “On the next restart, I buzzed the high side into second,” he says. “According to the officials, it was a little early, so they penalized me two spots to fourth on a yellow flag. We ended up staying there.”
The heat race run was good enough to set Chad up outside of row two for the main event. He would maintain fourth most of the way. “We were a little tight in the heat race,” he says. “It just wasn’t balanced. We got it balanced for the feature, yet it felt a little loose. If it had been a little tighter it would have been perfect. They key was, we got the car balanced.”
The team took their finish as a good preparation for this weekend’s shows, especially their return to Wichita on Sunday with the NCRA. “The racing wasn’t too bad,” says Chad. “We definitely figured some things out about the track that hopefully we can use on Monday…what to do, and what not to do. We hope to be tuned up. It had been a while since we had been there, so it was nice to get the rust knocked off.”
The ASCS-Midwest series will see its first action since early April on Thursday and Friday in Nebraska. On Thursday, I-80 Speedway near Greenwood will play host to a $2,000 to win event, followed by a Friday $3,000 to win date at the Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Nebraska. “It will be really nice racing in front of the hometown fans,” says Chad. “Greenwood and McCool are always fun places to run. Not traveling far is always a plus. We’d like to get that monkey off our back at Greenwood.”
If Thursday and Friday go according to plan, the team will head to Jetmore, Kansas for Saturday and Sunday. The Steve King Memorial race will commence at The Great American Dirt Track. $3,000 is on the line both nights, and $2,000 will be paid to the top point getter for the two nights. Sunday, it’s back to Wichita.
Does Ma Nature have a chance this weekend with five shows planned? “She can’t take them all can she?” Chad jokes. “It was nice to be on the track last weekend, rather than being at home doing nothing.”
