Bright Charges from Back to Earn Podium Finish During Debut at Path Valley
Inside Line Promotions – SPRING RUN, Pa. (Sept. 21, 2014) – Alex Bright overcame a hectic feature to record a podium finish during his midget debut at Path Valley Speedway Park last Friday.
“I’d love to race that track every week,” he said. “It’s a perfect sized midget track to race on.”
Bright almost wasn’t able to compete in the ARDC Midgets event, but a late partnership with Mike Heffner allowed him to race.
“We had some engine problems that we weren’t going to be able to get fixed and I saw he was interested in running,” Bright said. “I gave him a call and he said yeah. I was comfortable in the car right away. It was awesome.”
Bright maneuvered to a runner-up result during his heat race, which locked him into the feature redraw.
“For the feature they did a revenge draw,” he said. “Once I heard that I figured I was getting picked for 12. That’s exactly what happened.”
Bright, who leads the series in feature wins, was given the highest number by a competitor during the random draw. That lined Bright up on the outside of the sixth row for the 25-lap main event.
“On the third lap there was a wreck and there was only one lane to get by on the track,” he said. “One of the four-wheeler guys blocked it. I ended up hitting another car that had stopped right in front of me. It bent my front axle about three or four inches back.”
Bright restarted the race in 10th and after being patient for several laps, he passed three cars at the same time approximately one third of the way through the feature. However, one of the cars crowded him as they entered turn three and pushed Bright into the loose dirt at the top of the corner. He spun around and was forced to restart last with 17 laps remaining.
“I think I was 17th at that point,” he said. “I was kinda ticked off from everything that happened. I kept myself calm so I didn’t wreck. I just kept moving forward. On the last turn of the last lap I was about three or four car lengths back from the second-place guy. I threw it in there for a slide job. If it would have stuck I would have had it, but I knew that was a long shot. To come from 17th to third with everything that happened, I’m really fortunate.”
Bright’s third-place finish marked his 29th top five of the season.
