Late Model Racing Western Australia
SPIN SETS THE TONE!
Just days before the Australian Late Model Championship gets underway, it was Jason ‘Spin’ Oldfield (Oldfield Racing) who will now come in as the last start winner, having claimed victory in the Michael Holmes Racing March Mayhem event tonight at the Ellenbrook Speedway.
Twenty two cars would front for the $5k to win show, Kodee Brown (McCorry Brown Racing Team), Jamie Oldfield, Myles Moos (Michael Holmes Racing) and Jason Oldfield sharing the heat wins.
Just one car would not make the call for the thirty-lap feature, Tasmanian Brad Smith (Brad Smith Devil Motorsports 6T) sitting on the sidelines after his opening heat.
With a top four redraw taking place prior to the final, Jason Oldfield would start alongside Warren Oldfield, while row two saw the returning Kye Blight (Kye Blight Racing) line up alongside Jamie Oldfield.
Unfortunately the race got off to a tough start, Freddy Kinsella (Team Green Racing) and Casey Paech coming together and crunching the front straight wall. After a delay to clean up the stricken cars the field would form up once again, just eighteen remaining.
Attempt two was better, Warren going very wide and allowing Jason to immediately take the lead, while Blight and Jamie sat just behind Warren in the top four while Australian Champion Joe Chalmers was lurking just behind.
Blight stuck the model to the lowline and grabbed second on lap two, while shortly after Jamie went three wide with Warren and Chalmers to grab third.
Jason was now under pressure from Blight, Jamie was closing the gap in third and behind them Myles Moos was making the moves on Warren and Chalmers.
With four complete the yellows came on as Jay Cardy found himself coming to a stop in turn four.
The restart saw Jason still leading through turns one and two before Jamie went high, Blight low and both passed him through turns three and four, Jamie leading lap five from Blight and Jason.
The next stanza of laps would see Jamie and Blight going side by side in each and every corner, both getting their nose in front at numerous points, while behind them Jason was holding off Chalmers and Warren.
Lapped traffic began to play its part, but still Jamie and Blight would fight side, still exchanging positions at every possible opportunity.
At the halfway point Blight had got the nose in front and Chalmers began to make his presence felt, passing Jamie for second and setting out after Blight.
Again lapped traffic played its part, Blight having a moment and barely able to shut the gate on Chalmers with thirteen remaining.
Warren Oldfield got by Jamie for third, while a lap later Chalmers dove through underneath Blight in turn two to take the lead, but unfortunately the move was negated as Damian Hudson came to a stop in turn four right in front of the leaders without the lap being completed.
Unfortunately under the yellow lights Myles Moos would be forced infield, fifteen cars remaining for the restart.
Blight was away quickly while Chalmers got swamped by a pile of Oldfields, but the start was quickly called back as Abbey Pickering spun to a stop at the top of turn two, a couple of other cars also going out in sympathy.
Again Blight was quicky away, Chalmers stayed low and Jamie went high, able to use the highline to take away second from Chalmers on lap eleven before Chalmers found something extra and retook the position with ten laps to go.
Jason Oldfield was back on the scene and stole third with nine to go, Warren following him through a lap later for fourth, before Jamie again put it on the highline and reclaimed third with seven to go.
Back up front Blight and Chalmers had pulled away, but again the field was bunched up again when the yellows came on for Pickering and Peter Seaton who came to a stop together in turn two.
Somehow Blight just didn’t go on the restart, with Warren Oldfield racing into the lead from a couple of rows back, but it was immediately called back and the field lined up once again.
Blight had another go at it and this time it went much better while Jason, Jamie and Chalmers went three wide for second, both getting past Chalmers, as did Warren.
Beau Oldfield also threw his hat in the ring and dove under Chalmers, but yet again the yellows were on, this time for Darren Ahearn who was facing the wrong way.
This time the restart went single file, but just as the race went green Blight slowed and headed infield, Jason Oldfield now in the lead once again ahead of Warren, Chalmers and Beau Oldfield.
With five to go Jason was working to put a few car lengths between himself and the rest of the field, the laps winding down with minimal change in the dying stages, Jason Oldfield claiming the feature race win from Warren Oldfield and Joe Chalmers.
Amazingly, as Jason pulled infield after a victory lap, he had a flat tyre, cutting it very fine in the race to the chequers!
It was a big day of racing and the perfect lead in for what is a huge two weeks of action, all starting with the Australian Late Model Championship next weekend!
