Eldora Double for Reutzel after another All Star Podium
Lonnie Wheatley, CLUTE, Texas (September 20, 2018) – Aaron Reutzel and the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports No. 87 Sprint Car team continue to lead the way in the All Star Circuit of Champions title chase.
And just two nights of series competition remain, beginning with Saturday night’s All Star portion of Eldora Speedway’s “Four Crown Nationals”. Only the October 6 series season finale at Indiana’s Kokomo Speedway remains after that.
The Saturday card will round out an Eldora double this weekend for the Folkens Brothers Trucking/Dissolvalloy Downhole Revolution Triple-X team after taking in Friday night’s World of Outlaws Sprint Car series card atop the high-banked half-mile oval.
After racing to victory lane in his first Eldora start in 2016, Reutzel has enjoyed several strong runs aboard the Precision Catalyst/Hollywood Blasting & Coating/Beard Equipment entry atop the Eldora oval this season including a third-place World of Outlaws run May and a fifth-place All Star finish during June’s Speedweek.
Reutzel takes an eight-point advantage in the All Star title chase into Saturday’s card after picking off a third-place finish at Dundee, New York’s Outlaw Speedway on Friday and then posting an 11th-place finish at central Pennsylvania’s Selinsgrove Speedway on Saturday.
Reutzel started the weekend out in strong fashion by not only setting quick time on Friday night but establishing a new track record in the Nattress Construction/Momentum Racing Suspensions machine atop the Outlaw Speedway oval.
“We had a good car, we went out late and still managed to get a quick time,” Reutzel says.
Reutzel ultimately finished out the night with a third-place finish, his 26th top-five run of the season.
“We were a little too good early in the race,” Reutzel explains. “Ryan (Smith) was just as fast, I was biding my time and waiting for a chance in traffic. Then with about seven to go, we got too loose and I couldn’t get down the straightaways as good.”
Moving on to Selinsgrove Speedway on Saturday night, Reutzel continued his torrid qualifying pace by setting another quick time.
And, after transferring from heat race action, Reutzel’s fate for the night was determined by the Dash draw. Fortune wasn’t on his side this time around as he drew the last starting position.
A narrow track made for little progress with Reutzel settling for 11th after starting the feature in ninth.
“In the feature, the track was too fast, it was just one-lane racing,” Reutzel says. “We weren’t quite good enough to drive past people but nobody could drive past us either, it was one of those finish about where you start kind of deals. If we had drawn better for the Dash, we would have started near the front and finished there.”
Reutzel looks to Eldora Speedway on Friday and Saturday, with the Saturday portion an opportunity to gain some points in the All Star Circuit of Champions title battle.
2018 Quick Stats: 66 races, 10 wins, 26 top-fives, 38 top-tens.
