Reutzel Resumes All Star Title Defense in Illinois after Speedweek Score
Lonnie Wheatley, CLUTE, Texas (June 28, 2019) – Aaron Reutzel and the Baughman-Reutzel Motorsports No. 87 Sprint Car team continue their All Star Circuit of Champions title defense with a pair of events in Illinois this weekend.
The Folkens Brothers Trucking/Dissolvalloy Downhole Revolution Triple-X team takes to Jacksonville Speedway on Friday night before moving on to Joliet’s Dirt Oval at Route 66 on Saturday night.
From there, the Precision Catalyst/Hollywood Blasting & Coating/Beard Equipment team will take in three rounds of Pennsylvania Speedweek at Lincoln Speedway, Williams Grove Speedway and Port Royal Speedway on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before another weekend of All Star action.
Reutzel goes into Illinois after a weather-hindered Ohio Sprint Speedweek in which five of nine events were victimized by weather. Reutzel made the most of it though, adding his fifth overall win of the season with a score at Orrville, Ohio’s Wayne County Speedway last Wednesday night, June 19.
Reutzel opened Ohio Sprint Speedweek in strong form on Friday, June 14, by setting quick time over a field of 53 and was leading the way in the feature only to be collected by a spinning car in traffic that resulted in a 23rd place finish.
After an Eldora rainout the following night, action resumed at Muskingum County Speedway on Sunday, June 16, with Reutzel once again setting quick time aboard the Nattress Construction/Momentum Racing Suspensions entry.
Following a tough dash draw that resulted in a tenth starting position for the feature, Reutzel finished out the night in seventh place.
“You couldn’t really see much, we had a good car but I just slipped off the top of the track too many times,” Reutzel recalls.
With the balance of the week shuffled due to weather, the next round occurred at Orrville’s Wayne County Speedway with Reutzel racking up his fifth win of the season in wire-to-wire fashion.
“We got a good dash draw, then started up front in the feature and were fortunate enough to get the lead at the start,” Reutzel explains. “I was able to set my own pace and not make any mistakes to stay in front.”
Ohio Sprint Speedweek returned to Wayne County Speedway for the final round on Saturday with Reutzel bouncing back from mechanical woes to salvage a 15th-place finish in the feature.
“We hurt an engine in the ‘B’ Main and the ‘A’ was the next race out,” Reutzel says. “Our guys did a great job, they changed engines in less than ten laps and we went out and gained ten positions in the feature.”
This weekend’s pair of Illinois ovals have both been good for Reutzel with Jacksonville the site of a strong World of Outlaws outing several years ago and Joliet a place of All Star triumph last year.
2019 Quick Stats: 33 races, 5 wins, 11 top-fives, 19 top-tens.
