Inside Line Promotions – LAWTON, Okla. (May 7, 2020) – Like most race car drivers around the country, Brenham Crouch had been anticipating when the next opportunity to compete would arise.
That came last weekend when Crouch and team manager Joey Starnes returned to action, turning competitive laps for the first time since early March. Crouch took to the surface at Boss Dirt Track Speedway, where he came away with a third-place finish in Saturday’s Winged ‘A’ Class micro sprint finale. He placed seventh during Friday’s feature event.
“It felt great,” Crouch said of returning to racing. “We had iRacing for a little bit, like once a week. Other than that, I haven’t touched a steering wheel in a couple of months. So it felt great to get back to work.”
The 14-year-old driver maintained in heat race action Friday night. He placed third and was forced to run the B Main, which he won. He then started 11th in the main event and was able to hustle to fourth before officials docked him three positions in the final results after clipping the restart cone late in the race.
Crouch’s heat race struggles continued on the tight racing surface on Saturday. He was fourth in a heat race and lined up ninth on the feature grid before charging to a third-place finish in the final rundown.
“It came down to driver more than equipment,” he said. “We definitely weren’t in a good spot at feature-time, but I tried to make up for it. I could’ve done better, but considering the circumstances I think we did pretty good.”
Starnes, who is Crouch’s team manager, competed in the Non-Wing micro sprint division and had a good showing over the two-day event.
On Friday, Starnes won both his heat race and the main event. It looked like it was going to be a repeat of that performance on Saturday, but a mishap with another car ended Starnes’ night while leading the main event.
“We had a pretty solid weekend going until that happened,” Starnes said of Saturday’s incident. “I was running our R&D non-wing car so what I’m trying there seems to be working.
“Last weekend was a learning experience for Brenham, especially about timing on a tight race track. He showed progress all weekend.”
Crouch will compete in both the Winged ‘A’ Class and Stock Non-Wing divisions this Friday and Saturday at Creek County Speedway in Sapulpa, Okla., during the TUHB, Quality Threads Small-Town Showdown with the Lucas Oil National Open Wheel 600 Series presented by Hi-Plains Building Division.
“I think tight-knit racing and running wheel to wheel definitely helps as we build on our experience level and confidence racing short tracks,” he said. “I’m really looking forward to returning to a big track this weekend.”
