Sanders takes pair of top-five finishes during USMTS Spring Classic
Rodney Sanders of Happy, Texas, maintained his recent run of consistency during the 13th annual USMTS Spring Classic at Hamilton County Speedway (Webster City, Iowa).
Although Saturday’s $10,000-to-win finale fell to rain, Sanders registered second- and fifth-place finishes in the Thursday and Friday programs of the scheduled three-day United States Modified Touring Series event. The races drew 48 and 42 entrants, respectively.
On Thursday, Sanders qualified third in his group and went on to win his heat race, lining up the MB Customs No. 20 Dirt Modified fifth for the 30-lap A-Main. Sanders went on to score a runner-up finish in the $3,000-to-win race on the half-mile oval, trailing only Dan Ebert across the line after a wild last lap. Sanders was followed by Jim Chisholm, Alex Wiillamson and Dereck Ramirez.
Friday night’s action kicked off with Sanders setting the third quickest time in his qualifying group and winning his heat race. He started sixth in the 30-lap feature and ran as high as second before ultimately coming home fifth in the $5,000-to-win contest. Tom Berry Jr., Ebert, Jason Hughes and Will Krup finished ahead of Sanders.
With the solid results, Sanders has now scored nine consecutive top-10 finishes in 2023.
