Sanders takes USRA Modified win at Deer Creek Speedway
Rodney Sanders and his No. 20 team embarked on what turned into an eventful doubleheader weekend on Friday and Saturday, which ended with Sanders scoring his seventh A-Main victory of the year.
On Friday, Sanders was one of 15 United States Racing Association (USRA) Modified competitors on hand at Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wisconsin. The driver originally from Happy, Texas, won his heat race and started the 25-lap feature from the eighth spot. However, he was caught up in a wreck on the first lap on the 1/3-mile oval and was scored as the 10th-place finisher.
As a result of the accident, the team made the trip overnight to sponsor MB Customs in Menomonie, Wisconsin, where employee and fellow racer AJ Diemel worked diligently to help make repairs to the car.
On short notice, the team then decided to compete in the USRA Modified division at Deer Creek Speedway (Spring Valley, Minnesota) on Saturday. A total of 25 USRA Modifieds were on the property. After missing the draw cutoff, Sanders started last in his heat and picked up five spots to finish third on the 3/8-mile track.
He rolled off on the inside of the second row for the 25-lap A-Main and soon moved into the top spot. Sanders took the checkered flag over runner-up Lucas Schott by 1.647 seconds. The top five was completed by Jim Chisholm in third, Brandon Davis in fourth and Jacob Bleess in the fifth position.
