Vochaska & Mielke Headline Victories at Winston Speedway

Rothbury, Michigan (Saturday, August 23rd, 2014): The Winston Speedway celebrated back to school night Saturday with a full 7 in 1 show. The UMP DIRTcar Late Models headlined the program. They were joined by the UMP DIRTcar Modifieds, UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks, Factory Stocks/Bombers, Four-Cylinder Warriors, Four-Cylinder Mini Stocks, and Young Guns.

The Factory Stocks/Bombers were led out by 2012 track champion Josh Sternberg and Mike Dejonge for their 15-lap feature event. Sternberg took the early lead. He would be able to extend his lead with good distance between himself and the rest of the field. The checkered flag fell and Sternberg was the first to cross the line leading the entire race.

This was the fourth win of the season for the Muskegon, Michigan driver of the Stern’s Towing / Chevrolet. Two time and defending track champion Robbie Sternberg finished second. Mike DeJonge, Josh Grabe, and Dan Wilson Jr. rounded out the top five. Josh and Robbie Sternberg won the heats.

Kendal Marlink and Justin Giddings were the front row of the UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks 20-lap main event. Derek Poland would be the leader of the opening lap, and would remain there until lap 8 where the defending UMP DIRTcar Stock Cars National Champion Josh Frye would make the pass for the lead. However Poland would not give up the two would trade the lead two more times. When it was all said and done Frye was the driver picking up the win after taking the lead finally on lap 11.

The 30-year old Coopersville, Michigan native picked up his eighth win of the year at Winston behind the wheel of the Driftwood Bar & Grill / Chevrolet. Poland was forced to settle for second. Chuck Smith, defending track champion Sadie Klein, and Ralph Sternberg made up the top five. Frye and Jeremy Holman picked up the heat wins.

The UMP DIRTcar Modifieds were out next for a 20-lap feature. Aaron Morey and two time and defending UMP DIRTcar Michigan state modified champion David Mielke were on the front row. Mielke wasted no time and jumped out front in the early going. He would actually go on from there to pick up the win leading the entire event from green to checkered.

This was the 22-year old Gladwin, Michigan native earned his tenth win of the season in the Krompetz Elevators / Rocket by Ruhlman Racecar. Jacob Poel finished second. Morey, Jeff Erickson Jr., and Kevin Cavanaugh completed the top five. Nick Kurtz and Poel won the heat races.

The 25-lap UMP DIRTcar Late Model feature was led out by the front row of 2012 UMP DIRTcar Michigan state late model champion Brandon Thirlby and Alan Vochaska. Once the green flag dropped Vochaska took the offensive and held the top spot. He would end up leading the entire race from start to finish making the trip to victory lane.

The 30-year old from South Haven, Michigan picked up his first win of the season in his Sweet Manufacturing / Mastersbilt Racecar. Thirlby finished just behind in second. Mike Wilbern, Rob Taylor, and Bill Bray capped off the top five. Six time and defending track champion Rich Neiser and Bray won the heats.

The Young Guns were out next for their 10-lap A-Main. Hedie Barnhard and Gabe Flores led the field to the start. Flores pulled away with the early advantage after lap 1. However on the very next circuit Kristina Johnson caught up to Flores and was able to succeed in the pass for the lead. She would go on from there to get the win.

This was the fourth win of the season for the 16-year old from Grant, Michigan driving the I.O.D. Retails Display / Dodge. Morgan Smith was forced to settle for second. Flores, Barnhard, and Madison Crane rounded out the top five. Johnson also won the heat.

The Four-Cylinder Warriors rolled on the speedway for their 12-lap feature. Mike Goodwin and Gary Larabee were on the front row. The green flag dropped and it would be Goodwin getting the early edge pulling out the front. There was no stopping him from that point on as he would go all the way to the checkered flag for the win.

Goodwin, the native of Muskegon, Michigan picks up his ninth win on the year. He finished ahead of Larabee who finished second. Buck Spencer, Randy Larabee, and Brian Hammond capped off the top five. The lone heat race was also captured by Goodwin.

Paul Namey and Adam Grabe led out the final feature event of the evening which was for the Four-Cylinder Mini Stocks in a 12-lap A-Main. Namey wasted no time in jumping out with the early lead. The race would end up going caution free with Namey leading every lap and visiting the winners circle as the winner.

The 56-year old from Ada, Michigan earns his ninth victory of the season in his River City Motors / Honda. Scott Boyd finished just behind in second. Grabe completed the top three. Namey also won the heat.

This Saturday August 30th will be the final night of racing on the schedule for the season at the Winston Speedway headlined by the Winged Outlaw Late Model Special for $1200 to win presented by Johnny Mac’s Automotive. The UMP DIRTcar Modifieds will race for $750 to win. UMP DIRTcar Street Stocks and Factory Stocks/Bombers will take part in $500 to win specials. Plus, the Four-Cylinder Warriors special for $200 to win,The Four-Cylinder Mini Stocks facing off for $175 to win and The Young Guns battling for $75 to win. The Pit Gates Open at 3:30p.m., Grandstands Open at 4:30p.m., Practice Starts at 5:30p.m., and Racing Begins at 7:00p.m.
