Jones, Ward and Marcoullier Keep 2016 Winning Streaks Alive at TCMS
04/29/2016 (Auburn MI) It was a crisp April evening at Tri-City Motor Speedway with 105 competitors jammed into the pits for the second night of racing of 2016. The evening’s events sponsored by Joint Clutch and Gear Service.
A great field of Elgin Pro Stocks took the green flag led by #7r Dave Newcomb and #69 Nate Murphy. Murphy paced the opening laps of the 20-lap feature before the 2-time Pro Stock Champion #M65 Rick Spencer would try his hand at the front. By lap 10, last week’s winner and defending Mount Pleasant Speedway Champion #14 Nate Jones would make a high side pass for the lead. With six laps to go, rookie #9 Marc Super would bring out the yellow which would bunch up the field. But Jones would not be denied a back to back win on this night. He would finish ahead of #72 John Taylor, Spencer, #21 Darren Mularz and #80 Jaramie Raby. Newcomb, #14 Nate Jones, and #80 Jeremy Raby took home heat gold.
Thirty-one Melling Select Late Models needed run a number of qualifying races to determine who would be the twenty that would start the 25-lap feature. The B-mains were won by #6r Carl Ries and Oakshade Sportsman Champion #00 Matthew Chapman. #27 Eric Spangler, #19 Derrick Hilliker, #6m Dona Marcoullier, #0x Zack Olger won their Qualifying Heats. Lake’s #87 Josh Knoll and Dewitt’s #7m Brad Mann got to bring a stout field of fast drivers to the green flag. Knoll would grab the early lead as he and Patterson would hug the bottom line. Patterson would work the high side in an attempt to grab a share of the lead. Before he could make the pass a caution occurred that would allow Marcoullier to join in the battle along with #27 Eric Spangler, #55 Jeep VanWormer, #0P Kris Patterson Jr., and #9 Isaac Wolfgang. Knoll would end up cutting a tire after contact from behind and be forced to retire early. Patterson would inherit the lead on the restart, but that was short-lived as Marcoullier would take the lead on lap 13. He would run away with yet another TCMS feature win. VanWormer, Patterson, Spangler, and #23v Ryan Vanderveen were those that finished in the top five.
Defending track champion in the Main Street Seed and Supply IMCA Modifieds, #7d Myron DeYoung, and #5 Tanner Pray would pace the field of 20 to the green flag of the feature. DeYoung, #20W AJ Ward, #511 Chaz Pray, and #42 Craig Vance took heat race wins. #The B-main was won by #61 Frank Evans III. DeYoung would grab a straightaway advantage before he caught the back of the field by the halfway point of the 20-lapper. Ward, who won last week, worked his way to the back bumper of DeYoung before the caution flew for a spin in turn two on lap thirteen. This set up the dual we have seen over the past few years between Ward and DeYoung. On the first restart, Vance, running third, would lose control in turn two and collect a number of top drivers. This set up another restart for the final seven laps. They would swap the lead three times on the first lap back to green flag racing, but Ward would prove to be too much as he took his second feature in a row to start the season. DeYoung, #68 Heath Grizzle, #511 Pray, and #187 Gavin Hunyady would take the top five spots.
Rookie #7r Kevin Newcomb and veteran #1x Mike Vandermark Jr. brought the field of 20 Suspension MAXX Street Stocks to the start of their 20-lap main event. #67 Ryan Fitzgerald, #1x Mike Vandermark Jr., and TJ Gilbert won their heats. #51 Andrew Fidler would spin on the bottom of turn two on the opening lap. This would cause the field to have to give the start a second try. Vandermark would get out to the early lead for a number of laps as the event would become caution riddled. #57 TJ Gilbert would fight his way from ninth up to second by lap five. Gilbert would remain glued to Vandermark’s rear bumper in the low groove but mechanical woes would send him to the pits early. #96 Shane Wright got himself into the second position at lap ten to try and contend for a win. A caution with five to go would bunch the field for the final shootout to crown a winner between Vandermark and Wright. It was Vandermark that would get to the finish line first ahead of Wright, #11 James Jaenicke, #6x Dwight Crawford, and Fitzgerald.
In the Thornton Brothers Sewer and Septic Service Bomber Stocks, #16 Preston DeShano , who won the heat race earlier would start on the pole for the 12 lap feature event with #77 Stacie Staszak alongside. DeShano would jump out to an early advantage on the 6 car field. He would end up leading all 12 laps on his way to his first victory of the season. #27 Mercedes Kosha would finish runner up with Staszak, #18 Nick Putnam and #09 Jack Freese would finish out the top five.
