Podium finish in Winternationals finale at East Bay
Monday night saw Mark Whitener return to the driver’s seat of the Big Frog Motorsports No. 58 Late Model at East Bay Raceway Park (Gibsonton, Fla.) for the Wrisco Winternationals. Drawing a stout field of 70 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) entries, Whitener lost one spot in his heat to finish seventh. On Wednesday evening after Mother Nature axed Tuesday’s program, Mark came in fifth in his heat before picking up a 10-lap consolation victory. With $7,000 on the line in the feature, Whitener passed six cars in the 40-lapper to finish 14th.
For another $7,000-to-win A-Main on Thursday, Mark’s sixth-place finish in his heat race relegated him into the B-Main. Locking the Top 2 into the show, Whitener fell short with a sixth-place outing.
In a field of 74 cars on Friday afternoon, Whitener secured his spot into the A-Main with a consolation victory but was an early retiree on lap 29.
To wrap up a week-long of action on Saturday, Mark laid down the second-fastest time in his group before placing second in his heat race. Starting the $15,000-to-win finale in ninth, Whitener improved six positions in the 50-lapper to register a third-place finish. He trailed Devin Moran and Tyler Erb across the line with Tanner English and Brandon Overton rounding out the Top-5.
