Portsmouth Raceway Park
Lemley Motorsports - Mod Squad Spectacular
The Mod Squad Spectacular presented by Lemley Motorsports was the highlighted event of the evening Saturday at Portsmouth Raceway Park, and nearly 40 Modified drivers were on hand to compete for the $3,000 prize.
Stanley, NC's Taylor Cook claimed the Mod Squad. RJ Conley prevailed in the Late Models. Billy Staker took the checkers in the Limited Lates, and Derek Richmond grabbed the victory in the Sport Mods.
Cook is no stranger to winning PRP's Mod Squad Spectacular. The race was rained out last year and never rescheduled, but in 2017 it was Cook who took victory. Cook was fast throughout the night Saturday. He was the third quickest qualifier and won the third heat. Cook started third in the 30-lap feature before taking the lead on lap 6.
Nathon Loney placed second. Loney passed a bunch of cars throughout the course of the evening. Besides starting fifth in the feature and finishing as the runner-up, he started eighth in his heat and placed second.
Former track champ Ervin Vance charged up from eighth to place third in the Mod Squad. Current points leader Jeremy Rayburn was fourth. Pole sitter Adam Stricker led the first five laps but would fade to fifth. Travis Dickson, Eddie Carrier Jr, Austin Francis, Kyle Strickler, and KC Burdette rounded out the top 10. Carrier's six-spot jump made him the biggest mover of the race.
Kevin Hall and Craig Christian scored B-Main victories in the R.W. Rental & Supplies Modifieds. KC Burdette was the fast qualifer in the Dynamic Shock Service Modified Time Trials. All of the Modified races featured great door-to-door action.
RJ Conley was once again the man to beat in the Giovanni's Pizza Late Model Division. He set quick time, led every lap of his heat, and paced all 25 laps of the feature en route to nabbing his third win of the season.
During the first three laps of Conley's heat, he and PRP points leader Shannon Thornsberry had an incredible battle going side-by-side for the lead with Thornsberry down and low and Conley up high. Thornsberry would surge ahead down the straight-aways, but Conley would roar back on the high side through the turns.
While working lap 4, Thornsberry slid to a stop broadside in the middle of turns 3 and 4. Ron Hinds tried to get by but his right rear clipped Thornsberry's nose which forced Hinds to roll over. All drivers would walk away unscathed. Both Hinds and Thornsberry would start the feature, and Thornsberry would work his way up from near last to finish second. Placing behind Conley and Thornsberry were Kenny Christy, Audie Swartz, and JT Conley.
Staker was again dominant in The O'Reilly Auto Parts Limited Late Models. The "Rosemount Rocket" started dead last in his heat but would charge through the field to lead the first lap. The Portsmouth native would lead every lap of his heat and feature as he grabbed his sixth win of the season.
Matt Melvin finished as the runner-up. Jacob Curnutte, Shane Bailey, and Vincent Bender made up the remainder of the top 5.
In The EMC2 Party Rentals & Inflatables/Jump Zone Sport Mods, Derek Richmond logged his fourth win of the season in amazing fashion. Running third on a restart with two laps remaining, Richmond managed to get by both Zack Pendleton and Luke Jordan in the closing laps. Richmond made the race-winning pass on the white-flag lap.
Jordan would get second and Pendleton third. Jason Spillman and Cody Gifford would finish out the top 5.
PRP will be off this coming Saturday but will return with the 25th and final Fred Dillow Memorial Race on August 17th. The "Flyin' Fred Finale" as it is being called will pay Late Models $6,083 to win, Modifieds $1,583 to win, Limited Lates $1,283 to win, and Sport Mods $583 to win.
