Gregg Satterlee Goes 2-for-2 at BAPS, Claims Smokey Frye Classic Victory

York Haven, Pa.: Gregg Satterlee wasn’t too pleased with how his Friday night visit to Trail-Way Speedway ended.

You can’t blame him. He was competing for the win before motor problems ended his night early. The only silver lining was that he got a chance to come back the next night and finish what he started.

That’s exactly what Satterlee did ... In a big way. He charged to the front and secured the victory in the 40-lap Creekside Auto Sales Smokey Frye Classic, which paid $4,000 to the winner. Satterlee also received an extra $1,000 from Bernheisel Race Components for sweeping last week’s York County Nationals opener and this event.

“You never want to go through that, breaking a motor, but I guess that’s part of it,” Satterlee said. “But we got to regroup and got our other car and came back, and we were good again.

“The track was good. I think there was a lot of racetrack out there to use. It’s hard when you’re out front to really move around when you don’t have much of a lead. The first part of the race was maybe when I had the biggest lead, but we never really went on any green-flag runs. But it worked out, and I’ll take it.”

Early on, it looked like it was going to work out for Gene Knaub, who started behind Rick Eckert and Satterlee,

The green flag dropped, and Knaub shot to the inside of the first and second corner to charge from third to first. Satterlee settled into second, with Eckert positioned in third.

Knaub was on borrowed time. Satterlee got into a quick rhythm and took a shot at the lead on the outside of Turn 2 on Lap 3. He didn’t complete the pass, but he made it stick heading into Turn 3.

The first caution of the event came out on Lap 7, when Chad Julius in Turns 3 and 4. On the restart, Eckert skated by Knaub to take over second.

Catching Satterlee was going to be tougher. Eckert caught a break on Lap 11, when Jamie Lathroum rolled to a stop and wiped out a 1.240-second lead.

“The longer we went, the better we got, and I could find the cleaner part of the racetrack,” Satterlee said. “We just never cleaned up down here and kind of struggled in one and two the whole race, but I was able to get out front right off the bat, and that helped.”

Satterlee, of Indiana, Pa., survived four caution periods the rest of the way and was able to pull away to a 1.158-second win over Eckert.

Knaub settled for third in the final rundown. Wyatt Scott and Coleby Frye completed the top five. Chase Billet placed ninth and was the highest finishing 358 Late Model.

“The track is awesome here,” Satterlee said. “They did a good job getting it reworked, and I just had a good car tonight. I think Rick was really close to me the whole time. I feel like we had a pretty good car.

“We made some changes before the feature and tried a couple of things we never tried here and had to run certain tires, but I guess all-in-all, it worked out. We ended up where we needed to.”

Continued Satterlee, “Thanks to the track for having us back two weeks in a row. I’m looking forward to coming back if they put us on the schedule again.”

John Edkin topped a strong field in the BAPS Super Sportsman main event to collect his second career win at the speedway.

Scott Grace took the early lead with Ryan Rutz falling into second. The pace was slowed on Lap 3, when Tom Wyckoff crashed. He was checked out by medical personnel and was OK. Rich Eichelberger was also involved.

Frankie Herr and Rutz were involved in an incident on the restart. When the race went back to green, Timmie Barrick wrestled the lead away from Grace on Lap 5. Meanwhile, ninth-place starter Russ Mitten was carving his way to the front.

Mitten took over third, but his race came to an end on Lap 11. He rolled to a stop in Turn 2, and fluid poured from his car.

Edkin took advantage of the restart and slid past Barrick on the 12th circuit. Barrick appeared to have a mechanical issue and slid back to fifth over the next three laps. He finished sixth.

As for Edkin, he was able to distance himself from the field. Matt Ondek was in pursuit, but he fell short by 1.522 seconds at the finish.

“I knew I had to get the lead on the restart,” said Edkin, of Marysville, Pa. “I knew it was going to be somewhat close, but I hope it was clean.

“This is such a competitive division. I’m blessed to have the crew and Kenny [Edkin] and everybody around. You can have all of the equipment you want, but if you don’t know how to us it or what to do with it, you ain’t going nowhere.”

Scott Dellinger came from eighth to third in the final rundown. Kenny Edkin and Mike Enders completed the top five.

Patrick McClane started eighth and surged to the front to take the win in the Super Homes Extreme Stock main event.

Donnie Broderick led the first lap before Bill Powell took over the top spot on Lap 2. Five laps later, McClane made the winning pass and held off a persistent Powell over the remaining laps.

Powell settled for second, with Travis Horan, Hunter Fulton, and Broderick completing the top five.
