Bronk, Schill, Johnson and Lane pick up GRP checkers

It was another beautiful Saturday night for racing at the Greenbush Race Park as 86 cars filled the pits and the fans filled the stands for the Rick Johnson memorial for the Streets.

The Rick Johnson memorial for the Streets drew 21 cars for their 25 lap feature and $1,000 payday. Daniel Aberle of Finley, ND, quickly took the lead, but Eric Riley of Morris, MN, took over the top spot down the backstretch on lap two. A total of five caution flags before getting six laps in slowed the pace of the race. Riley would hold the lead until lap nine when Ryan Johnson of Karlstad, MN, powered past him coming out of corner four. Two more cautions with nine to go didn't slow Johnson at all, as he had his car dialed in riding the cushion to pick up win number four on the year. Riley would finish second, followed by Kyle Dykhoff of Perham, MN, Jeremy Gust of Strathcona, MN, and John Halvorson of Warren, MN. Gust, Dykhoff, and Halvorson won their respective heats along with Scotty Messner of Bemidji, MN. Feature positions 6 - 21 are unofficial pending a review.

Mark Esala of Thief River Falls, MN, would sit on the pole for the 14 car Modified feature and lead the first lap, but Rick Delaine of Stony Mountain MB, made the pass for the lead down the backstretch, but Delaine’s lead only lasted about 3/4 of a lap as he drifted a little to high in one and slid off the top. This would hand the lead over Shane Wahl of Greenbush, MN, Wahl would hold the lead until about halfway when Justin Bronk of West St. Paul, MB, made the pass coming out of corner two. Bronk would run the rest of the race unchallenged and go on to get his first GRP win. Wahl would finish second and Shawn Teunis of West St. Paul, MB, third. Teunis and Jamie Trautner of Hendrum, MN, would pick up the heat wins.

The Midwest Modifieds would send 13 cars to take the green flag for their feature and front row starter Steve Hougard of Strandquist, MN, would lead the first lap, but before they made it back to the flag stand, seventh place starter Lance Schill of Langdon, ND would take the lead coming out of corner four. Schill would hold his lead even through four more cautions, with the real race happening for the second through fifth spot between Patrick Sobolik of Hallock, MN, Gary James Nelson of Ponemah, MN, Jordan Wahl of Greenbush, MN, and Justin Olson of Thief River Falls, MN. Those drivers swapped positions several times over the last five laps. But if would be Schill picking up his second win of the year with Wahl coming home second and Olson third. Nelson and Nate Reynolds of Hoople, ND would get the heat wins.

The 11 car Pure Stock feature would have Ryan Anderson of Newfolden, MN, leading the first four laps before Bryon Berger of Badger, MN, would make the pass for the lead coming out of corner four. Five laps later in the same corner, Berger would surrender the lead to A.J. Lane of Williams, MN, and Lane would go on to get win number two and a sweep of the evening. Jon Duray of Karlstad, MN, would finish second and Berger third. Dusty Caspers of Bagley, MN, picked up the other heat win.

Dexter Dvergsten of Greenbush, MN, would take the early lead in the nine car Lightning Sprint feature, but on lap three Alex Truscinski of Greenbush, MN, would make the pass for the lead coming out of corner four. Dvergsten wouldn't make it easy for Truscinski, as he was up top running the cushion and made a run to retake the top spot a couple of times, but each time Truscinski would hang on to the lead. Truscinski would go on to get win number two on the year. Dvergsten would finish second and get the lone heat win and Kelsi Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, would finish third.

Kelly Steele of International Falls, MN, picked up his third win of the year in the Outlaw Mini Mods, as he passed Jerry Larson of Grand Rapids, MN, for the lead coming out of corner four on lap 11. Tyler Jonson of International Falls, MN, would finish second and Larson third. Justin Cutrer of International Falls, MN, picked up the lone heat win.

Joel Olson of Karlstad, MN, lead every lap of the 4 Cylinder feature but the last one, as John Current of Bemidji, MN, remained undefeated to get win number five for the year, and a sweep of the evening. Olson would finish second and Shannon George of Bagley, MN, third.

Up next for the fastest 1/4 track in Northwestern Minnesota will be the 21st running of the Elliot Baker memorial for the Modifieds, along with a special for the Pure Stocks, also running that night will be the Streets, Midwest Modifieds and Lightning Sprints. This will also be military appreciation night. Pit gates open at 4:30, grandstands at 5:30, cutoff for the draw is at 6pm with the green flag waving at 7pm sharp.
