Podium finish with the Southern Nationals at Tri-County

With 26 Late Models entered for the ninth-round of the 12-race tour, Freeman took part in time trials but broke a driveshaft in his heat race, ending his night early.

On Thursday evening at Tri-County Raceway (Brasstown, N.C.), Payton topped the 22-car field in time trials to lock into the pole for the $7,553-to-win A-Main. He was running in third when a rain shower forced officials to cut the 53-lap feature short on the 27th circuit.
