Johnny Scott captures first career Lucas Oil victory at Wheatland

Friday night found Johnny Scott going to Victory Lane at Lucas Oil Speedway for the second time in 2022. The triumph marked his third overall this season and first-ever Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series triumph in his Rancho Milagro Racing No. 1st Mesilla Valley Transportation/ Longhorn Chassis/ Clements Racing Engines Super Late Model.

“This win is huge. I have been out for the last month after hurting my back. I just want to thank my sponsors and crew for sticking with me,” Scott said in Victory Lane after topping Jonathan Davenport in a spirited battle for the win on Friday evening. “I’m just glad to be back out here. Hopefully we can keep this rolling. Heck, I’m gassed right now. That was a rough track.”

With Mother Nature axing Thursday’s Cowboy Classic, Johnny and Stormy Scott were part of the 63 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) and Lucas Oil Midwest Late Model Racing Association (MLRA) entries assembled at Lucas Oil Speedway (Wheatland, Mo.) on Friday evening for the Tribute to Don and Billie Gibson.

Johnny followed up the fifth-fastest time in his group with a heat race win while Stormy qualified 10th-fastest in his group before placing sixth in his heat. Needing to place second or better to make the A-Main, Stormy logged a fifth-place finish as his night came to an early end.

Winning an exciting battle over front-row starter Jonathan Davenport in the 30-lap preliminary feature, Johnny raced to his first career Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory and third win of the season. He collected the $6,000 payday ahead of Davenport, Jimmy Owens, Hudson O’Neal, and Ricky Thornton Jr.

With his win on Friday night placing him on the pole for Saturday’s Show-Me 100 finale, Johnny led laps early but faded back to 17th when the checkered flag flew in the 100-lapper. Stormy was granted a provisional into the main event after placing third in his B-Main but was an early retiree on lap 43. He was credited with a 29th-place finish.

On Monday afternoon, Stormy stopped at 411 Motor Speedway (Seymour, TN) for the Valvoline Iron-Man Southern Series-sanctioned Scott Sexton Memorial. After missing a transfer position in his heat, Stormy secured his spot into the main event with an eighth-to-third run in his B-Main. With $10,052 on the line, Scott raced forward seven positions in the 52-lap affair to finish 11th.

Johnny leads the latest Lucas Oil MLRA standings by 45 markers.
