Rodney Sanders rumbles to USMTS checkers at I-70
Rodney Sanders ended his dry spell in United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) competition on Saturday night with a $10,000 victory at Missouri’s I-70 Speedway in his Wichita Tank Racing No. 20 Kenny’s Tile/ ARMI Contractors/ MB Customs/ Hatfield Racing Engine Modified.
His 11th win of the year, marked his first USMTS triumph since May 29, 2021.
“Well, it’s obviously a great feeling to get the USMTS monkey off our back. We haven’t been bad, we just haven’t been able to have everything fall into place to get a series win, but now that we’ve got one out of the way, hopefully they will start coming on a regular basis again. These fields are tough, and if you are a little bit off it’s hard to get wins, so we’ll take this one and build on it,” Sanders said. “I’m looking forward to getting the Late Model out for the Dirt Kings race at Mississippi Thunder (Speedway) this Friday. We may also take the Modified but haven’t decided yet.”
The United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) brought Rodney Sanders and 30 competitors to Dallas County Speedway (Urbana, Mo.) on Thursday afternoon for the third annual Wehrs Machine Bullring Bash.
Following a sixth-to-fourth run in his heat, Sanders secured his spot into the opening night feature with a consolation victory. Moving forward seven positions in the 42-lap feature, Rodney recorded a sixth-place finish.
For the Grant Junghans Memorial on Friday at Lakeside Speedway (Kansas City, Kan.), Rodney outran Jacob Bleess in his heat to pick up the eight-lap victory. Starting the $20,002-to-win A-Main in eighth, Sanders advanced three spots to finish fifth.
He followed Tanner Mullens, Terry Phillips, Dustin Sorensen, and Tyler Davis to the checkers.
On Saturday evening, Sanders stopped at I-70 Speedway (Odessa, Mo.) for the inaugural Bushwacker. With a second-place finish in his heat placing him on the pole for the feature, Rodney briefly surrendered the lead to Nic Bidinger early but regained the top spot on the 12th circuit and led the remainder of the 32-lapper to secure his 11th win of the season. He earned $5,000 ahead of Lucas Schott, Dereck Ramirez, Jason Hughes, and Tanner Mullens.
Rodney climbed to fifth in the latest USMTS point standings.
