Cory Hedgecock steals $12,000 Scorcher at Volunteer Speedway

Inheriting the lead when leader Dale McDowell slowed with four laps remaining at Volunteer Speedway, Hedgecock paced the closing laps to bank the $12,000 Valvoline Iron-Man Late Model Series winner’s check.

The victory was his 11th of the season.

"I'd rather be lucky than good any day. Dale (McDowell) was fast, I get so tight here the longer we run, and Dale is really good about steering," Hedgecock said. "Just tickled to death, glad it all worked out. Saw he was having a flat going down on the left-rear with that restart and thought if we could just keep riding around here, I might be able to get this thing.”

Cory Hedgecock was back behind the wheel of his Eagle Racing Engines No. 23 Late Model on Wednesday evening at Volunteer Speedway (Bulls Gap, Tenn.) for the Valvoline Iron-Man Southern Series-sanctioned Scorcher.

Drawing 33 cars for the mid-week event, Cory topped his 16-car group in time trials before placing first in his heat.

Rolling off on the pole for the feature, Hedgecock paced the field for opening 18 circuits before a charging Dale McDowell overtook the lead. Regaining the top spot from McDowell on lap 46 after the leader went down with a flat tire, Cory went onto capture his 11th win of the season and eighth career Iron-Man Series triumph.

He collected a $12,000 payday ahead of Michael Chilton, Scott Bloomquist, Cla Knight, and McDowell.
