Thornton tops night two of The Showdown at Central Arizona Raceway

Ricky Thornton Jr. continued his late-season hot streak with another victory on Saturday evening. His latest triumph came during The Showdown at Central Arizona Raceway aboard his D&E Outside Services / Hoker Trucking No. 20RT Wehrs Machine & Racing Products / Excel Floor Covering / Certified Inspection Service Lethal Chassis Modified.

“Our weekend didn’t start off so great on Friday night, but we bounced back to get the win on Saturday, and then finished second in the finale on Sunday,” Thornton Jr. said. “Between the Modified and the Super Late Model the past month has been really good to me, and I appreciate everyone who makes it possible. We’ll try our best to add a few more big checks to the wall before we call it a year.”

Returning to the driver’s seat of his D&E Outside Services No. 20RT Modified, Ricky Thornton Jr. invaded Central Arizona Raceway (Casa Grande, Ariz.) on Friday evening to compete in The Showdown at CAR presented by Ed Whitehead Tire Pros.

Drawing 47 IMCA Modifieds for the three-day event, Thornton Jr. got the ball rolling early as he raced from third-to-first in his heat but was an early retiree from the 25-lap feature on lap 15.

Bouncing back to complete a clean sweep on Saturday, Ricky followed up a heat race win with a flag-to-flag victory in the feature. He recorded his seventh win of the season ahead of Tanner Black, Zachary Madrid, Tim Ward, and Jeremy Thornton.

With a third-place finish in his heat race on Sunday placing him on the fifth row for the finale, Thornton advanced forward seven spots in the 40-lapper to register a second-place finish. He followed Jake O’Neil across the line with Tim Ward, Kollin Hibdon, and Zane DeVilbiss completing the Top-5 finishers.

The driver, known as “RTJ,” now turns his attention to this weekend’s Harvest Hustle Turkey Classic at Cocopah Speedway (Yuma, Ariz.). Complete shows for the IMCA Modifieds are slated for Friday and Saturday.
