Hammer enjoys strong showing in UMP Modified DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia
Kyle Hammer was back behind the wheel of the Brian Shaw Racing No. 145 Modified on Monday evening as the 52nd annual DIRTcar Nationals kicked off Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.).
With 102 DIRTcar Modifieds packed in the pit area for six-straight nights of racing, Hammer’s qualifying effort placed him on the second row for his preliminary feature. Inching forward one spot in the 20-lapper, Kyle recorded a third-place finish.
For another round of prelims on Tuesday, Kyle followed up the fourth-fastest time in his 48-car group in time trials with a second-place finish in his feature.
Scoring his third consecutive podium finish in Wednesday’s prelim, Hammer posted a runner-up outing in the 20-lap affair, chasing Charlie Mefford to the checkers.
Back in action on Friday after Mother Nature shortened Thursday's program, race officials made the decision to shift Saturday’s DIRTcar Nationals finale to Friday with threatening weather expected. Starting the $5,000-to-win main event in 11th via runner-up showing in his heat, Hammer rebounded with a 16th-place finish from the tail after getting caught behind a spinning car while running in the top-10.
For the rescheduled preliminary feature from Thursday, Kyle recorded a fourth-place finish.
As expected, threatening weather forced officials to cancel Saturday's contest.
