Mitchell competes with CCSDS at Magnolia on emotional weekend

Jon Mitchell traveled to Magnolia Motor Speedway (Columbus, Mississippi) on Friday and Saturday to participate in the Cotton Pickin’ with the COMP Cams Super Dirt Series (CCSDS).

Mitchell was racing with a heavy heart at the event, as his mother Brenda passed during the weekend after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Mitchell’s No. 5 Super Late Model, featuring a wrap incorporating the purple pancreatic cancer ribbon, was one of 46 CCSDS cars at the 3/8-mile track for the event’s opening night on Friday. Mitchell finished fifth in his heat and moved into the night’s 40-lap feature race by grabbing the third and final transfer spot in his B-Main. He started 22nd in the $4,000-to-win main event and came home in the 21st position.

On Saturday, the field increased to 47 CCSDS competitors for the weekend finale. Mitchell finished sixth in both his heat and B-Main, using a provisional to transfer the 60-lap, $12,000-to-win main event. He started 26th and drove forward eight spots to take an 18th-place result.

After the emotional weekend, Mitchell remains seventh in CCSDS standings with two 2023 events remaining.
