Bruening Returns to Volusia Speedway Park
After almost a two-week break in his Speedweeks action, Tyler Bruening returned to action on Monday night at Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) with the 53rd annual Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals.
Forty-seven DIRTcar Late Models entered the event and Tyler started the night with the fourth-fastest time in his qualifying group before finishing fifth in his heat race to lock into the 18th-starting spot for the $7,000-to-win feature.
Unfortunately rain struck the 1/2-mile oval before the 30-lap feature could be contested, postponing it to Wednesday night.
On Tuesday evening another $7,000-to-win program was contested, and a fifth-place finish in his heat race promoted Tyler to the 25-lap feature in the 17th-starting spot. Bad luck bit Bruening just past the race's midway point, when he was collected in a multi-car incident that resulted in heavy damage to his No. 16. He was sidelined to a 19th-place finish.
Wednesday night saw the field divided into three $5,000-to-win programs. Tyler qualified sixth in his group to earn the sixth-starting spot for the 20-lap prelim feature. He went on to advance two spots to a fourth-place finish behind Brandon Sheppard, Ryan Gustin, and Daulton Wilson.
The night ended with Monday's make-up feature, where Tyler raced to a 13th-place finish from the 18th-starting spot.
Thursday's World of Outlaws (WoO) CASE Late Model Series event drew 48 entries, and Tyler qualified second fastest in his group and then won his heat race.
Starting fifth in the 35-lap feature Bruening ran in the Top 10 throughout the main event before finishing ninth in the $12,000-to-win feature.
Friday's action proved to be a rewarding outing for Skyline Motorsports. Tyler finished second in his heat race to earn a spot in the redraw. He received the sixth-starting spot for the $16,000-to-win feature, and that's where he would cross the finish line in the 40-lap affair.
Saturday's finale fell victim to rain bringing the week to an early end for Skyline Motorsports.
